Hello,

My husband and I will be visiting Culebra in about 1.5 weeks.  We are looking forward to a lot of snorkeling.  Any recommendations? I've heard of Flamenco (where we are camping) and Carlos Rosario.  Are there other favorites?  There is only so much info. about Culebra on the internet...

Thanks, Gracias:)

my favorite snorkel is a long one, but well worth it. Just be careful of currents. basically its from the point just north of Melones (close to town) to the point just south of Carlos Rosario. You could do the reverse.

Here's my snorkeling buddies on that snorkel route.

Dang, Laurie - one would need to be a really good swimmer to do that, but you make me want to try it.

My favorite snorkel is Punta Soldado, but you need a car. Flamenco has some nice fishies, and Carlos Rosario is excellent. You can also get to Tamarindo from the path to Carlos Rosario. There's a gate in the fence at the back of the parking lot at Flamenco. Go through it and take the path over the hill. Straightish/left to Tamarindo; right to Carlos Rosario.

it's worth it -- or actually any part of it....I've had some snorkels there straight out of National Geographic. I've also done parts of it and walked back....sometimes I wonder if I'm part fish :D You do need to watch the currents -- especially going around the points, but this is also where you'll see the best underwater life....

when I was a much younger girl, back in the 70's, humpbacks made occasional visits to this area, and it is now a protected zone from fishing....i've seen everything from manta rays to nurse s.....s (I hate using the name, because it scares some people, and these are just not scary in any way). One memorable snorkel we swam with an eagle ray for a long time -- he was almost leading us around.....once you get following one, its so easy to completely forget how far you've gone.....just typing about it makes me yearn for an afternoon of snorkeling....anything besides waiting for a snow hurricane.

I'm doing it next time I'm there. In March at Melones, I saw a leopard flatworm undulating in the water column. It was one of the most fascinating, beautiful things I have ever seen in the water. I got to watch it for about 3-4 minutes, until I stupidly headed out to find Lewis. By the time I got him and dragged him back to the spot, it was gone. :(

I found a video on the 'net of a flatworm (not a leopard flatworm) free-swimming (usually they are just hanging out on reefs or in the sand - if you see them at all - pretty rare to spot them). Anyway, watch this till the end, when the flatworm leaves the coral and swims. Beautiful!

sometimes it's best to leave the men behind -- Oh, all right, unless of coarse they are Lewis...:D

it's worth it.....and I know that you of all people are up to the swim....if I had to add up all my snorkeling and diving over the years, this area would be the most visited by a long shot.....but like Larga, I wonder about giving away my secrets?;)

Although I would still love to see some critters like that.  I appreciate the advice so far.   Thanks!

seriously, the s...s that I'm referring to don't even look like the ones you have in your mind, and are totally passive......and you rarely see them. Please don't let that worry you.....I'm much more scared of the sea urchins and fire coral.....those are two things to stay away from.....I've had up too close encounters with both, and neither is fun....

:D

George and Dudley are the best snorkeling companions I can think of......when they get tired, they simply swim to shore, and take a break lifeguarding Mom out in the water.....

Buenas! Now that I can see the pictures, the movie of the whatever worm was unbelievable. I used to go snorkeling a lot, but had never seen anything like that. Nw that I am "older" I like planting a lot more.

Thank you for the things you all write about.

Refering to your Avatar I understand completely their life guard function; Do they also monitor the water temp?
