On Monday evening, April 7th, a 6% crescent materializes
a little higher in the sky. Set against the cobalt-blue of
early evening, the moon reveals its da Vinci glow,
a pale impression of the full Moon inside the vivid crescent.
Five hundred years ago, Leonardo da Vinci was first to
explain this phenomenon: it is Earthshine, the light of our
own planet Earth illuminating the Moon's dark terrain. A
crescent moon with Earthshine is widely regarded as one
of the prettiest sights in the heavens.

In Culebra our Sunset is 6:36PM; look for this beautiful
site in the West before Moonset (approx 8:24Pm)

tonight is supposed to be better, although as Island Woman said, I'm not sure how.

it's going to be a tough call tonight -- last night I was able to bounce between Zydeco and the moon, tonight will be harder, as our local movie theater is hosting a screening of 10 Questions for the Dali Lama, along with a talk from the director.......as time gets closer, I'll choose between the Questions or the Answers.....

:)

I've seen some interviews with the Dali Lama...he's amazingly contemporary and astute; I'd go with the movie ;)

Beautiful stuff, shutterbugs!

A number of years back I was treated to a cat-in-the-cradle while visiting Culebra.  The upturned crescent was as slender as your photos, though I can't recall which heavenly body played the perfectly centered cat.  Haven't seen anything as perfect, since.  The cat is always off-center, it seems.

That same visit, I gained my love for Orion and the Pleiades, two constellations that don't show as well at St. Louis lattitude.  The sky is not looking hopeful for tonight - overcast forcasted.

Doug

What is the explanation for the cresent being more on the right hand side in the North and it being on the left hand side in the South?

I can't say with any authority, but suspect it is the different angle the lens has on the target.  If tou walk a couple steps to your right the shadow on an object you view will cover a slightly different part of the object.  I wonder if the cat/cradle phenomenon is similar.  Never centered from my latitude.  I'll go digging through my old photos and see if I took a picture of the Culebra occurance, scan it and post.

Mr. Bayberry suggests that which side the moon's crescent is depends on where the moon is in relation to the sun.....
