St. Louis is in the middle of flyover land, but this weekend it's what's flying over that is noteworthy. We have a group heading up the river road (Mississippi and Illinois Rivers) to do some birding. We'll be concentrating on bald eagles, trumpeter swans, great blue herons and brown pelicans*. I've been up there nearly every weekend since early December and never counted less than 75 eagles. Christmas eve, I saw a massive kettling formation of pelicans, multi-thousands in size. This time, we're staying at the lodge at Pere Marquette State Park in Illinois. We don't do the guided tours - the guides are full of BS, something I guess you have to be if you're going to charge folks. Cocktails at 430pm, Saturday, thankyouverymuch!

*The same pelicans - at least close relatives- that surf the swells at Tamarindo.

Okay - I need an education (I live next to Alabammy you know). I assumed flyover country was an allusion to the military. Did you mean migratory birds?
Wonder if these are the same eagles that end up nesting over near Lake Guntersville in Alabama most Januarys?
Have a great time!Last edited on Fri Jan 12th, 2007 02:29 am by Diving Debbie

Even though I'm on Culebra and you're not , I'm still jealous Doug!! That sounds awesome!!!
Heah -- what are your dates here? Did you notice on the Calendar that March 1 is Jim Peterson's 60th -- biiiiiiiiiiiiggggg bash, I'm sure.....just a heads up -- Debbie too.
I'm trying to justify being here, but doubt I'll pull it off -- I was just asked to join a green collaborative initiative in my home area formed by one of the guys just trained by Al Gore to do viewings of An InConvienent Truth, and I feel really honored, and excited....and probaly will remain in Maine trying to save the planet one small inch at a time....but you never know -- watching Jim go over the edge might just be worth a plane ride....

There are more birthdays than you know in March - Walter's is the 15th. Walt Philips (you know him?) too. A couple named Mike and Susan - Mike's birthday too. They all fall in the same couple of weeks. There was some talk about turning Lewis' birthday party into a bigger island-wide birthday celebration, but we didn't want to take on the responsibility.
Doug's coming down just for Lewis' birthday - didntcha' know? Turns out he's a deadhead too. He could probably give a rat's ass about Lewis' birthday; he just wants to hear the music!
You're in a tough spot there, missy - hard to pass up the "green" exposure!Last edited on Fri Jan 12th, 2007 03:29 am by Diving Debbie

I'll be arriving the afternoon of March 6th, if I don't get stranded in Vieques. So far there are only 2 of us wanting to be on that flight. I leave on the 11th on the 1130 flight to Isla Grande.
Deb,
Flyover is a term that pokes fun at the media who think there is only life in NYC or LA...everything else is "flyover", i.e., not destination-worthy. We kind of take pride in it. Not that I don't enjoy a big city fix in the Apple, mind you...

Debbie, Probably not the exact same birds, but the same trend. Eagles and other predator birds are a major green success story. Banning DDT just in the nick of time is why they have survived, and lately thrived. By eating rodents and fish they ingested it which affected their eggshells. Few eaglets and hawklets(?) were able to reproduce and it got scary. Now I see them all over. We used to see a few migratory birds when winter forced them here to find breaks in the river ice to feed. Now I see them year round, even on the smaller streams we kayak.
Of course I'm coming to celebrate with you and Lewis and hear the band

Well, see, that's why I didn't get it. I have been in St. Louis more times than LA or NYC combined (never been to LA, actually).
