The bastards have killed Ralph, the whale shark! My favorite diving forum is down, Lewis is on the west coast, the cat doesn't listen to me rant, so who's the next best group of friends?

You guys!

As you may know, the masterminds of the Georgia Aquarium "rescued" two whale sharks and they, Ralph and Norton, were the highlight of the Aquarium when it opened about a year ago. Damned if they didn't go and procure two more, Trixie and Alice, just this past summer. It's been a huge controversy here, especially among divers. To us, it's like putting a bald eagle in captivity. How could you confine something so beautiful, large, and RARE to a freaking aquarium? According to the CNN article "The staff recently had been concerned about the 22-foot-long whale shark because of his swimming patterns and because he had lost his appetite". . . Depression? What are all these highly educated scientists thinking allowing the Arthur Blank Foundation (Home Depot Founder) to source whale sharks for our aquarium? I hope it doesn't become a black eye for Atlanta, but I do hope it raises awareness amongst the masses that some animals just can't survive in captivity.

My heart is heavy today. :(

Very sorry to hear that, Deb.  I will confer with my friend, "Fish" Smith, formerly of "Sea World", who is currently curator of the Penguins and Puffins exhibit at the St. Louis Zoo, and get his comments.  He is a very vocal activist for ethical treatment of animals.  I helped him with a benefit concert to  fund anti-poaching efforts on behalf of black rhinos.   I only see him at Jakes Leg shows, so it might be a week or two.

You're joking right? this can't be true. My heart is just crumbling at the thought of a whale shark in a swimming pool at an aquarium.....oh my gosh.....that is so sick. Aren't there laws about that? Have the idiots figured out that they need to release the surviving ones, and fast? Who on earth came up with the idea of doing this?

OK, I just read the article, and now I'm mad, really mad......watch a video of Ralph's last swim????? Are they nuts???? "sort of friendly shark"? you've got me started...

I'm so sorry Debbie.....and sadden at us humans and our continued shows of ignorance.
