The newest issue of the National Geographic features the world-wide crisis in the fishing industry, with pages 66/67 referring to the Snapper Farm here on Culebra.

If only the government powers that be understand the urgency and importance and had done more (or anything for that matter) to keep the operation within US waters.....when they move their operations, it will be a huge loss to Culebra -- they employed lots of locals, and were also offering great educational opportunties for our youth.

I was told by Swiss Johanna that the research aspect is being kept here, as well as a smaller fish growing operation.    Perhaps that means the local kids will still be part of the learning process.

Due to red tape and government hassles, the fish farm itself will be moving to South America (someone can correct me if I'm wrong on the location). It's a huge loss for Culebra.....

any business that shows local youth how to make a viable living in Culebra, especially one involving the natural surroundings, is educational in my book.

I agree, too bad they didn't do it.

The original proposal was the Villa Pesquera would eventually
learn the system and have a "net" themselves. As far as I know
noone has been prepared.

I believe that total frustration at all forms of government dampened their enthusiasm, and some agencies in particular.

I agree, but it was a valiant effort. Mary, Johanna and the rest of the
team are well-versed now and maybe something can still be done in
the near future.
