Carmen Rosa and I are working with some other people on making a garden on the property of the Children's Center - the Asociacion Educativa de Culebra. We'll be using the square-foot gardening method, which is raised beds divided into square foot sections. This uses less space and will give the children (and hopefully, eventually adults) their own *plot*.
We're getting seed donations from various companies that have heirloom and organic seeds, and will be gardening organically as well. We'll also work on getting traditional Puerto Rican seeds and plants for regional vegetables and herbs.
The main idea is to use the garden to teach about where food really comes from and how good it can be, water supplies, composting, care of the island and the plain old joy of planting a seed, watching it grow and eating the results! On a personal level, I'm hoping my Spanish will grow as well :)
Volunteers are being rounded up. Already we have had help scraping and leveling the small bit of land we are using. Containers for some plants are being donated. Hopefully we will be getting some soil from a project that we've been told is really good dirt!
Poco a poco!

You go girl!!!!!! Way tooooooooo cool, and I can't wait to see it. Pat yourself on the back -- I know this has been a long time dream of yours, and it's going to do SO much for the community and and the kids.

Let us know if there is anything the forum community can do....

I'll pat myself on the back when I can take pics of the kids grinning over their tomatoes!  It is a long time dream and I'm really thankful to Carmen Rosa and the  center for giving time and space to help make it come true.
The camera hasn't arrived yet (Howard in on alert!), but soon come, I'm sure.
The best thing the community can offer is to come on by and get some dirt on their hands. I'll put out the word when it's time. Culebra time...;)

That's so cool MJ. I'm familiar with square foot gardening as I live on a heavily forested lot (don't send Victor 'round here!) and I have about 6 square feet that gets enough sun to be gardened.

If there's anything I can do from afar, I'd love to help. (I'd really like to be there and help in person - sigh!)
