| As i have thought about last night's events, and what we as a community can do to take a new turn and go down a healing path, and help ensure future safety as community, I thought we could open a dialog here. What can we do for our youth? How can we work with them to show them alternative life styles that do not bring a high level of risk into their lives have longer term benefits? How can we ensure that outside influences do not creep into the Culebra community and lifestyle? Let's ask questions and continue talking as a community which will not only help us heal and grow, but might lead to safequards for the future.

As a parent of grown children, I've considered this issue a lot. Personally, after much thought and discussion with other parents, I think they should be locked in their rooms at age 11 and let out around...27. Give them a computer and a few tech manuals and a bank account with the parents name on it.. Creativity is a beautiful thing. Feeding and watering is not optional.
Have you ever read much about Bhutan? Talk about keeping outside influences out, and it worked beautifully (where else is there a GNH (Gross National Happiness) category as to the state of the country?)...but that is changing exponentially with the introduction of...guess what...television and the internet. Oopsy.
There IS no going back to the Culebra of 20 years ago, unfortunately. It IS up to the parents to keep an eye on their children, to promote the awareness of right and wrong, and to live it themselves as an example. It IS up to the community to provide an infastructure that provides alternatives to negative lifestyles as well as the skills needed to earn money in legal venues.
There are people trying very hard to help bring these things about...but there will be the lost ones. In small towns and communities, they aren't just names in the paper, they are the sons and daughters (and mothers and fathers) of people you know or know of.
I'm not trying to be overly harsh here, but this is reality. There are some serious problems that have been ignored here for a variety of reasons. That doesn't make the issues go away. Lack of strong consequences for punishable behaviour only encourages more of it, and in the sad long run, does no one any good.
But what do I know? I forgot to lock mine in their rooms too.

I'm working on an editorial for May, It's challenging and
depressing, I need a break. So I reviewed the last weeks
downloads and screen shots. This one made me feel
better. It's a Skype screenshot of Ricky & the cutest
grandaughter in the universe, Liya! Now my editorial
will be a little brighter too.Attachment: ScreenshotRicky&Liya.png (Downloaded 98 times)

After today's shooting...we must do something as a community. There will be a meeting this Friday at 9:00am at Usos Multiples. The major might be there. It is not that we are taking the law in our hands. It is a responsible response to what the community is going through.
As Gami said last Monday at his brother's service: It is our responsibility. The problem is in the families. For our children we most do something.
Hope to see you on Friday!

Hmmm, for some reason this week the gods are smiling and allowing me to log on to the forum. Perhaps I have suffered enough since leaving the island .
All of which allows me to ask the question - to what events are people refering in the 4 May and subsequent postings?
