Noise Pollution
Submitted by ktfinklea on Thursday, December 6, 2007. Apparently when we're not overfishing or polluting our oceans, we're blasting them with military active sonar so loud that it's causing mass whale stranding and deaths. The sonar, which is used to find other submarines and objects, can generate sound as loud as a rocket launch and reach for hundreds of miles. I f mass stranding events weren't scary enough, many scientists suspect that the whale deaths are only the visible impact of sonar testing, meaning that there are many more species being adversely affected.
Right now the U.S. Navy is looking to use this disruptive sonar off the coast of North Carolina purely for training purposes. The range they want to create would be directly in the path of a migratory route for the last 300 North Atlantic right whales. The NRDC is working to oppose this training range, but needs help in letting the Navy know just how damaging this sonar would be to both the endangered right whales and other marine life. So it's time to help save the whales again, and you won't even have to put on a wetsuit. Help out and sign this petition to protect the last 300 North Atlantic right whales: (http://www.nrdconline.org/campaign/Act_Now_To_Save_The_Whales_NC)
