What a great day! Francie's birthday and the arrival of dear dear friends of mine, and hey, got to stay open at the cart and sell some things too... AND Chris G helping me get some gravel in the mudzones, with Greg wielding a shovel for spreading it out. What more is there??
Here are a couple of pics.

My friend Chris brought me a CD, Bruce Cockburn (yeah, but it's pronounced Co-burn) of this tape I got in Canada a zillion years ago and *shared* with him - we stole it from each other for many years, and one of my favorite songs is on it..Waiting for a Miracle. When I got to Culebra, I found my miracle...and even with the flaws it is close enough.
Here are the lyrics, with my friends safe abed and me dancing in my little home...because it is what those I've met born here know and knew and have told me - and what I caught the glimpse of, and what I'll fight for to have again.
Waiting for a miracle..with the hard work. I've only been here a few minutes in our real life time on Culebra...but I want to help see the angel set re-free. Culebra in its reality, without the uncaring rape of developers and those who uncaringly buy from them and ....other parasites - it's not too much to hope for...is it? Yes, I know - it's time to go to sleep, but in the morning, I'll still mean it.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Look at them working in the hot sun
The pilloried saints and the fallen ones
Working and waiting for the night to come
And waiting for a miracle
Somewhere out there is a place that's cool
Where peace and balance are the rule
Working toward a future like some kind of mystic jewel
And waiting for a miracle
You rub your palm
On the grimy pane
In the hope that you can see
You stand up proud
You pretend you're strong
In the hope that you can be
Like the ones who've cried
Like the ones who've died
Trying to set the angel in us free
While they're waiting for a miracle
Struggle for a dollar, scuffle for a dime
Step out from the past and try to hold the line
So how come history takes such a long, long time
When you're waiting for a miracle
You rub your palm
On the grimy pane
In the hope that you can see
You stand up proud
You pretend you're strong
In the hope that you can be
Like the ones who've cried
Like the ones who've died
Trying to set the angel in us free
While they're waiting for a miracle
Sandra Novaks pics of Johanna's Farewell Party are here:
for lyrics here is my humble submission
Three Dog Night 1970
Out In The Country
Whenever I need to leave it all behind
Or feel the need to get away
I find a quiet place, far from the human race
Out in the country
Before the breathin' air is gone
Before the sun is just a bright spot in the nighttime
Out where the rivers like to run
I stand alone and take back somethin' worth rememberin'
Whenever I feel them closing in on me
Or need a bit of room to move
When life becomes too fast, I find relief at last
Out in the country
Before the breathin' air is gone
Before the sun is just a bright spot in the nighttime
Out where the rivers like to run
I stand alone and take back somethin' worth rememberin'Attachment: Johanna's.png (Downloaded 117 times)
Wow. I didn't know Cockburn wrote that song. I had always heard it in the context of the Jerry Garcia Band, and assumed it to be of Dead origin. Here is a taste.
| Nice pictures, all. Smiles and giggles everywhere...all I can say is, "Hold that thought - I'll be there in two weeks!"
| At least you can understand the words when Bruce sings it. Yeah, yeah, I know - what a great supporter I am of the in-house deadhead. . .
Very tasty. I need to get into Cockburn.
Hey, I'm not even the #1 deadhead here!
The Dead do/did a lot of covers. I've been to a show where nearly every other number was a Beatles song. They did the Who, Dylan, Little Feat, Phish, Cash, Kristofferson, somebody named Traditional, and more. Always giving the selection their own, semi-in-tune, patina. Sometimes even screwing up the spelling of the title...guys, it's Iko, not Aiko.
Of the 29 times I saw them and derivative bands, between 1970 and 2007, 6 shows were fabulous, 6 were horrible, including the last two with Garcia 2 weeks before his death, and the rest were good and fun. Say what you will about the Dead, there is nothing, nada, zipola like a Grateful Dead concert.
Actually my original post. I deleted it because it might be
offensive, but what the hell:
Here are my favorite concerts
1. The Stones - First few notes of Satisfaction pure pandemonium
2. Led Zepplin - Plant 2nd best Rock Vocalist (1st Ian Gillian Deep Purple)
3. Moody Blues - Trancendent
4. ZZ Top - Pure Overdrive Rock
5. The Grateful Dead - Cause it's xmas and I'm trying to stroke my friends,
so I moved them up from 41 where they were tied with Sir Douglas Quintet
The last Dead concert I went to I walked out after 20 minutes
everybody was smokin dope and sayin "Cool huh" and "You got
a bone" I thought I was in the middle of a Cheech and
Chong Movie, so I went down the road and caught the second act
of a double bill featuring George Jones and Buck Owens.
Everybody was standing around comparing belt buckles, so I
got the hell out of there went back home dropped some
Mescaline and a half a hit of acid, put on some Hendrix. It must
have been great because the next day I was swearing to my
friends that all of them (including Cheech and Chong) were
playing the same gig and it was awesome to see Hendrix doing
Tiger by the Tail with Buck. Now that was some kind of concert!
I've enjoyed, live, all on your list except Zep, a major gap in my cultural development - it'd be sweet if they'd tour for their recent reunion. I think Allison Krause may have waylaid Robert Plant, though.
My Post was in jest of course. But I did check out the few videos
available on the Led Zepplin Reunion and Plant sounded great.
I've seen Moody Blues live 3 or 4 times, mostly in their heydey.
I introduced Jack LeRocque (Jack and Pat) to his first modern concert.
It was Joe Cocker, very unusual, as you know there has been a lot
of controversy about his performance ability.
But he was popular so we went, I wanted Jack to see a modern concert
in a big auditorium, the year was about 1971-72. The concert
was horrible, we finally started walking out with a lot other people.
In fact there was so may leaving the exit halls were jammed. Just as
we were leaving Joe Cocker went into "It's High Time We Went" We
perked our ears, as did many others, now there was a jam trying
to get back into the arena, needless to say, he "brought the house
down"
Well Jack's education continued when Moody Blues played the
Hampton Roads Coliseum in 1972, Our generation had been and was still
going through hell, the anti-establishment music was fine but it
wasn't relief, but breaking all barriers and all the rules was Moody Blues
pure escape. The only question was how could they possibly create
their sound live.
The night was at hand, everyone was worried they
coudn't pull it off (we were fans-we wanted them to) Lights Dim
Blue lights slowly lit then the mellatron piercing the coliseum with
the opening licks to Tuesday Afternoon, everyone was stunned, not
only could they reproduce their sound, it was exact, on the money
almost chilling. It was 1972, in that Coliseum, the Moody Blues took
us out of our reality, into an ethereal spiritual world. I remember
looking around, there was no noise from the audience, complete
concentration, professor types, hippie types hugging their children,
people with tears streaming down their cheeks as they smiled and
acknowledged their neighbors. I still get chills thinking about it.
And Jack? Finally dumped the Hit Parade crap and joined the
prevailing tide. He still loves Moody Blues, so does his kids.
For those of you who are curious here's the link for the
Cocker number, live was so much better
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Juw_L3ys89M
If you are a moody blues fan here's an interesting acoustic
version of Tuesday Afternoon with Justin Hayward
