Destined to be one of the most exciting events of the year, the Fundación de Culebra is pleased to announce the grand opening of the new Museum in the 1905 Building (up the hill from the cemetary -- you can't miss the fun red doors!) tomorrow, Saturday at 6:30 p.m.  I got a sneak preview, and not only have they done a wonderful job at remodeling, but the artifacts and photographs on display are breathtaking.....

and as an added bonus, there will be a very special celebration for Don Monchin for his 85th Birthday!  ¡¡¡¡Feliz Cumpleaños!!!!

The Culebra Foundation (more info on the Foundation will be available) and others have worked very hard to bring the Museum from a dream to a reality. If you love Culebra, you definitely should take part in the opening of the new museum and learn what the past has to teach us for today and tomorrow. Children from both schools will also be particiapting, along with other elders in the community. It's going to be great!

So...Saturday has a full social calendar!!! Go to the auction, then head to the grand opening! With good planning, you could grab something to eat inbetween the events.

Some tourists who are camping today asked about publicos to the musuem. I'm not sure what the set up is for that. Hopefully those with cars can also help with rides afterward (or before, if you meet someone who needs a ride out there).

Well, of course in Culebra style, the museum opening was very good, though not exactly what was *planned*. There was a good turnout; good speeches; good food and drink.

Most importantly, the museum itself is very impressive! With the crowd in there it was a bit hard to look at everything closely, but I will go back at a quieter time. All sorts of photographs, pottery artifacts, boat models...

There was computer on with a loaded up slideshow of photos - it went too fast, as one local older person was trying to tell me what was what. Next time.

The museum project isn't finished. It has a wish list: one thing on it, a video camera to record some oral history, was promised by a person there as soon as  the need was heard. Good deal! One thing down, more to go, check it out.

A good sized crowd gathered for speeches:

Dolly blew the conch shell, the ribbon was cut by the elder and younger generations:

The Foundation founders were honored and Culebra is honored! As was said a few times, this is not the end of the project for Culebra, it is a beginning. The lighthouse next? With help and elbow grease, dreams can become reality!
