Our friends at Coralations.org just sent this news -- exciting in the fact the boa was found on Culebra (my apologies to Bayberry, who probably won't be so excited at this news), but sad that it was found because of earth and vegatation being moved and destroyed for yet more development on Culebra.  The original article in Spanish is at

Rare Endangered Tree Boa Found in Culebra
Mega-Project in Culebra Impacts endangered specie

Culebra, May 13, 2008 - A specimen of an endangered species,
Epicratus monensis, commonly known as the Virgin Islands
Tree Boa was found in the construction clearing of the mega
project Villa Mi Terruño in Culebra. The snake about 2 feet
long was found yesterday morning by environmentalists
who were visiting the site after receiving a call reporting
heavy machinery near the beach adjacent to the mega-project.
Normally, this boa lives in trees in coastal forests and can be
seen at night but it seems that the movement of ground
caused by the construction caused the snake to come out
during the day in search of a safer place.

After being captured carefully it was reported to the Fish
and Wildlife Service in Culebra (# 787-742-0115 ) and the
local office of the DRNA for identification and documentation
(DRNA # QC-09-08). The vegetation that has been destroyed
for the construction of this project is considered critical habitat
for this type of tree snake. These snakes are harmless and
help control plagues of rats other rodents. The boa was released
near the place where he was found.

Villa Mi Terruño is a mega-tourism project which proposes to
build residential 81 buildings with 134 residential units, plus
a hotel of 64 rooms, an area of summer camp with 24 rooms,
swimming pools and recreational facilities on 108 acres of
land bordering the sea. This mega-project was cited recently
by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for violations of
the Clean Water Act for impacting adjacent coastal waters that
affect coral species and protected habitat for sea turtles.

Neighbors of the island of Culebra also have complained that
the mega-project has fenced the shoreline area. To this day,
public hearings for this project have not been conducted but
construction has already started.

It sounds like it is time to get the signs out and march again. I'm sure the details (who owns this, etc) are known to Mary Carmen and Mary Ann. All we need is the word. I've heard a lot about this and it's only getting worse. The troops are ready, give us the word.

Hooray for the boa, says Bayberry.   I believe that said project is the one above the Water House.....    Boa is welcome to come in any time, as actually happened to me one day when we were still living there.    A common Culebra culebra had come up the footbridge to the front door and was rearing its upper body to try to get in.   Bayberry had just come back from town and fled the scene....

more information from our friends at Coralations.org -- this matter needs to be watched closely -- if they were messing with polar bears, they wouldn't be able to get away with what they are -- but on small Culebra, it seems to easy for the developers to get away with raping the land.  But what they don't count on is the island spirit of standing up against this kind of thing.

"The endangered species was captured moving away from machines on the datiles side of the beach.  The project has been cited by EPA for Clean Water Act violations and this before public hearings. There is an endangered cacti onsite as well.    20 years ago, this endangered species would stop a project like this...Today however, its just another casualty if people don't again move into the streets on this.   ACDEC recenlty gave them some kind of an endorsement for 34 buildings.   I have not seen this info yet, but when I do I will post it and get it to everyone.    I sent a FOIA to USFWS and found out they are asking for  80 buildings / four units each like Costa Bonita,  plus a 60 room hotel, plus swimming pools, eco-cabins and of course all is being proposed in partnership with PR Housing authority in the event they have problems rezoning..the local government partnership and the housing emergency will help them.  The housing authority is proposing low income housing adjacent or within their resort...incredible.   Also the marina project (Gabriel Espasas) is moving forward next to Costa Bonita..."

Please, do not jump to conclusions without hearing all sides. I am not just talking about the issue of the boa. We need to evaluate ALL sides. Some times we can be very surprised! We most use dialogue to get to the truth.

Please toss in anything you know that should be included. Or will there be a meeting to let people know and discuss what is going on? Thanks!

There was a court hearing in San Juan, I think, that Maryanne and Mari Carmen are supposed to attend. Maybe they will bring some news. Other than that the group is writing a letter to the major, ACDEC and the Municipal Assembly. Depending on the response we'll decidde the next step.

Slowly but surely!
