I'll start with an apology I didn't do this before now.

The passport folks will be here tomorrow morning through the day at the multi use building for those wishing to apply for or renew their passports. But today is the important day, sort of pre-passport day. If you see this in time. Go up to the alcadia with either checks or money orders...75.00 & 25.00 respectively - one for the passport, one for the hacienda. There will also be someone to take the proper photos for a 5 dollar fee. You will get your application for either of the above and have help to fill it out. Naturally, if you are renewing, bring your old passport. If you are applying for the first time, you will need your birth certificate, the official one.

Now, whether you can get away with doing all of that tomorrow, I can't promise, but I was told the photo person will most likely be there tomorrow as well. Best to give the alcadia a call at 787 742 3521.

Just a quick follow up on this. I could easily have skipped the pre-passport day but no big deal, basically it was picking up some forms.

The passport people came in only a little bit late. I was no. 17 on the list and only waited a short while. Two people were over from the big island and took two and three people at a time, with everything moving along quickly and amazingly efficiently. I'm sure there were snags but I didn't see any.

When my turn came it was: sat down, handed my filled out form to the woman, signed my money order while she stapled my photo in place. And then she was saying, "You should get this in six weeks, next." So, about 5 minutes. Of course that was for renewal, but I was still really impressed.

So, again, if you need a new passport or to renew, it's pretty easy to just do it here, with all the help you might need to get it right. A call to the Alcaldia will let you know the next time they are going to be on island.
