I am very sad to inform you of the passing of our dear friend
Larry Creque. He was fighting a tough battle with Pancreatic
Cancer. I just came from his mother's house, it was overwhelming.
Dolly and the children are all there with many friends and neighbors
to support.Last edited on Mon May 21st, 2007 01:49 am by Jim

My heart and soul grieve for the loss of a true good man, and a dear friend. I had to take a few minutes to compose my thoughts, and am sure my words still will not be adequate....Larry was many things, all of them good and special, and I have so many fond memories, all of which bring a smile through the tears. I guess if I was to pick one, it would be when I was closing the Wash & Wear Cafe, I had a huge library of used books, which operated as a trade depot for locals and toursits. Larry devoured books, and couldn't get enough of them. Well, I tried and tried to find homes for the hundreds of books I had, and couldn't -- at the last minute, I was going to take them to the dump, and Larry found out and came with a truck to take home all the books....in his eyes, I was about to commit a cardinal sin.
Having slept on the news (not very well I might add), I thought of two other favorite memories. The first is the friendly wave and tradmark smile you got from Larry whenever you passed him on the street (or in my case as he passed me sitting at the cart). The third is off Larry and his cherised sweetheart Dolly, recently back from a soujourn to the States for a while, back on Culebra and out at Flamenco for the day. They so clearly were so in love -- they looked like teenagers and were so heartwarming to watch as they interacted with each other, totally oblivious to the people around them.
Larry would do anything for anyone, and always with a smile and a twinkle in his eye. I'm glad for him that his suffering is over, but my heart and love go out to his entire and extended family......I can't imagine Culebra without Larry.....and I can't begin to fathom the pain and loss they are going though now. Larry lived his life with humor, grace, unselfishness, and strength -- we could all take a lesson from him....
I wanted to share a couple of writings, mostly because whenever I think of Larry, I'll always think books....
"Every part of nature teaches that the passing away on one life is the making of room for another. The oak dies down to the ground, leaving within its rind a rich virgin mold, which will impart a vigorous life to an infant forest" Henry David Thoreau
"Deep wet moss and cool blue shadows
Beneath a bending fir,
And the purple solitude of mountains,
When only the dark owls stir --
Oh, there will come a day, a twilight,
When I shall sink to rest
In deep wet moss and cool blue shadows
Upon a mountain's breast,
And yield a body torn with passions,
And bruised with earthly scars,
To the cool oblivion of evening,
Of solitude and stars"
