I've started a new thread for this sad, but important news and request for help and support.
We are waiting on specific info as to who exactly the check should be made out to, and confirmation that Neil Romero's address is P.O. Box 34......but this is the background info from Island Woman:
This morning (admin -- now yesterday morning), bartender Steve hurt himself badly in a serious accident. He was working with a friend and a grinder saw (I don't really understand exactly what it was, my ignorance) jumped off the table when turned on and hit him on the foot, severing tendons. He is or was still waiting in the hall at Centro Medico in San Juan earlier this evening for treament, down on the priorty list. We are collecting funds for him, as he is the current income producer in his family; Zulema and Kai, his brand new son. Zulema hasn't worked since Kai was born 3 months ago and he doesn't have insurance that will take care of all of them. This is obviously going to be a drawn out situation and it is time for our crazy family to come together to support them.
If you want to contribute, please send funds to Dinghy Dock, care of Neil and made out for Steve. I'll have more details if needed, you can email me at mjstark@coqui.net and I'll let anyone know how to direct any contributions.
So...it was a very happy night of joy and a very hard night knowing Steve is in pain and Zulema and Kai are here (they are going over tomorrow...her mother is with Steve, as is Lewis). Open your hearts and open your wallets.

Some wonderful follow up news. After waiting in Centro Medico all night, Steve was operated on this morning. The doctor said he managed to get the tendons sewn back together (and we hope he is absolutely correct). Steve was discharged and is being flown home this afternoon.
The recovery time will be a month at minimum. As most who know Steve know, all of his jobs (and he has a few) are done on his feet...he's not exactly a desk jockey. So that means at least a month with no income.
The collection taken up last night from Dinghy Dock and Mamacita's was almost 500.00, which had Zuleyma in tears again, but good tears this time. There are collection jars at Mamacita's and Dinghy Dock for those of you on island. We will also be having some sort of fund raiser in the near future. We'll let you know!
Edited update:
I just talked to Steve. He just got home and is resting comfortably (like he's going to say anything different?). He expressed his (pretty stunned) thanks for all the help and good thoughts surrounding him, Zuleyma and Kai. Let's keep him surprised.
Checks can be made out to Steve Bohm.
The mailing address is:
Steve Bohm
PO Box 692
Culebra, PR 00775
Thanks to all who have been emailing. I'll send this to each of you as well.

MJ and every single member of our BIG Culebra Family,
Steve, Kai and me have NO WORDS that can express our deep gratitute for all the love that's been surrounding us in this difficult time. Steve's foot is doing well....now we're on our way to the clinic to see if the doctor can help me remove the weird bandage because we need to cure the wound in 24 hours after the surgery. Hopefully I can learn how to do it myself because it is hard for Steve to get out of the house ....he needs to rest and leave his leg up.
I will look for a few minutes in my new busy agenda to write some words for you all. Again....THANK YOU for all your support and love.
Zuleyma, Steve and Kai

We are SO glad to hear that Steve is home and resting. I know you will do a great job helping to take care of his wound so he can heal quickly and be back to his old self again. Our thoughts and hugs go out to you all right now, extras for Kai!

Just a note again...I haven't talked to Zuleyma or Steve in the last days, but I continue to get emails of help and support and love...and just want to publically acknowledge and thank the many who have put their money where their bar tab is... ok, kidding, but you get it. Heartfelt wonder and thanks.
Sometimes I think, how could I love Culebra and all she has given me, through every aspect of my life here, more?, which is, in so many ways, about connection with others here... and then something happens, and then...I fall in love deeper, again.

Another great update. Zuleyma came by the cart today to tell me...to share with you all...if there is a good Centro Medico story - and we know they are rare - they are claiming it.
Steve still does not have feeling in the two toes most affected (not surprising, he's early in still) but she reports the color in the affected area is good, so there is good blood flow happening. With help from our favorite nurse, Zuleyma has learned to change the bandages and says everything looks clean and right with healing progressing in its time.
Without going into mushy detail, I can say that Steve and Zuleyma are pretty hugely overwhelmed with the love and support they are getting from our close and far flung family. Thankful and grateful would be greatly understated operative words here.'Nuff said.
So far, so very good!

Dear Sue and family,
THANK YOU for the card, we just received it yesterday. Steve is doing a lot better...his afected toes have good color already and the wound looks good too. Now he's reaching the point of being BORED and anxious...since I've been living with him he never liked to stay home for long periods of time, he always been VERY active. I have no words to describe how happy, amazed and gratefull we are to have people like you around us. Everyone on the island have been very supportive also.
When is your next trip over? I hope you, Keith and the kids are doing well.
XOXO.

Hi Z!!
Sorry I didn't respond sooner, we have been in San Francisco for a trade show. I am so glad Steve is doing better and the outlook is good!! I'm sure the boredom must be really tough right now, but I know you will help him stick it out until he can safely resume some activity.
Our love and thoughts go out to you all right now. Keith and I are hoping to get back down in April, so hopefully we will see a recovered Steve by then??

If he is a good boy and STAYS OFF HIS FOOT...yes, I think he should be recovered by then. Otherwise, we shall have to take measures....(yes Steve, this is a warning...you only THINK you are restless and impatient now...you don't want me to have to get serious about you staying put - Kai would cry).
