Yes Doug, you of course are right. After some
reflection (it didn't take a lot) I think I might say the
"look" saddens me in the sense I know the
type of world it represents. The people "in
the suits" are obviously varied and I have met
many from Puerto Rico who are very interesting
and compelling.
As for the statesiders who may be offended, we
see you differently here, usually you are in T-shirts,
plus if you're coming back to Culebra often, well,
that says everything to us!Last edited on Mon Jul 14th, 2008 09:26 pm by Jim

Jim,
Reading my post this morning, I think it sounds a lot more harsh than I intended it to. The thing is, that there are so many people whose appearance give one impression while getting to know them gives a completely different one. That works both ways. As a former long-haired hippie whose idealism has been only partially crushed, I used to rely far too heavily on that indicator of character, much to my social detriment.
I have avoided working for publicly owned corporations, so far. IMO, their credo of the primacy of short term earnings over long term viability is too hard on employees and their families. This strategy hasn't eliminate the need for suits, occasionally, but keeps my motivation alive. On the flip side, I've known many guys with ponytails - guys who define themselves as anti-establishment - who would happily throw grandma and/or their 'friends' and/or their country and/or the environment under the bus, for a buck. Ya' just don't know until you know, ya' know?
Doug

How interesting Doug, I remember coming back from
Vietnam and being indoctrinated by an extreme
hippie looking History prof named Denlinger (I should
look him up some time). I joined the counter-culture
revolution and protested against Nixon. The vibes
were great, it wasn't all dope, it had a lot to do with
Peace and the movement for social justice,
Afro-haired blacks were bonding with leftie whites and
one thing you could tell for certain was, if the person
had long hair they were "cool" (with the exception of
Sonny and Cher although we didn't know it till that TV
Smothers Brothers imitation 'less the political edge' thing )
Then one day I was in my weekend warrior mode after
getting a job as a road man for pharmaceuticals,
I picked up a hitchhiker with long hair and good grief
within two minutes I was stunned to find out he was as
"square" as my dad plus he was "rootin" for George
Wallace for President. I remember thinking how sad, you
couldn't tell by long hair anymore. I pretended I was
getting off the next exit, got rid of his ass, and looped
back on the interstate.
One more. my son Ricky was fond of bringing off the wall
people over (to see my reaction I think) One day he shows
up with three skinheads with the express purpose of watching
me react and mess with their heads. I told him I wasn't
interested but he begged and finally I walked into the den
to face two white kids and a black teen with shaved heads
and black boots.
I sat down mesmerized, after an introduction
I said "Tell me what is this skinhead thing all about" I
got various versions of "Well its a um about my
skinheadedness" and I say "Yes I understand that, but what
does this skinhead moniker mean or stand for and how come
your black, that doesn't seem to fit" I got some more of
"Ah well Mr. Petersen, we...uh..ah..its like..uh..about being..
a skinhead" i gave up.
I thanked them for stopping by,they were actually polite kids
from the local H/S. Then for a second I was worried about
Ricky hanging around with such airheads and as I left the
room Ricky turned to me, so they couldn't see his face, and
gave me a "don't look at me I don't get it either grin" and I felt
better.
Yea Doug your right, you can't judge a book by its cover.Attachment: hippie.jpg (Downloaded 60 times)

Hey Island People
In case ur not interested- there are mainly two seperate factions of skinheadedness. 1) a group of working class youths rebeling against the system due to lack of jobs-began in England. They're primary attire was a pair of doc martins which many of the working class in wore. This shows a basic pride in their working classedness. 2) Due to the popularity of job unavailibility-the mentality caught on in America.
However- America skinheadedness also incorporated non-white races. This caused quite an uproar in skinhead world. And they fight to this day...
Being purposely bald also caught on in the general populations of the civilized world. Worthy of mention- Phil Collins and Sinéad O'Connor (read: skinhead o'connor). Although many people chose not to incorporate the expensive doc martin boots due to to lack of funding.
One day i was at work in mpls.mn and was informed that the president of the minneapolis skinheads was trapped and surrounded at macdonalds by baldies (another faction). after much thought of the unfairness of the ensuing fight (15-1) i left my job walked over to macdonalds peeled off my shirt looked for the biggest bastard looked him dead in the eye and without a word walked through the human barrier grabbed the distraught president of the mpls skinheads and left macdonalds. We left unscathed. Simple! Sure!! Anyway its not bragging if its the truth.
in closing they wanted me to join their gang-i declined but attended many of their free beer parties. by the way i never cut my hair and it was very very long. im sorry if any of this makes sense or doesnt make sense. please excuse all grammar correctness or incorrectedness. Enjoy paradise.
