There WAS a hawk, I swear it! But for some reason, hawks smell my camera and immediately are fifteen miles away when on the wing...so, I took a pic of these gulls laughing at me instead

and then. late in the day, Greg, my psycho landlord (who has a damn good eye) gave me a whistle to let me know the elusive heron was on the walkway dock.
I blew about 10 pics and this isn't the best but...at least I got something other than a fish butt  (though I have to say Deb, if that goat shot is something that anyone scoffs at, they are idiots - it's fabulous).

see....psycho landlord is good for something!:)  give him a hug for me....

love seeing that heron.....and I'm guessing those gulls were laughing at Lurker Dude turning another year older instead....they're certainly looking the right direction.

We've seen a couple of great birds too since we've been home.  Two days ago the loons came by to visit.  We're not sure but the little bump on the mother's back might be a chick.

And this guy just sat on the branch 50 ft up the tree and  posed.  Clearly he wasn't bothered by me taking his picture

Oh, what "On Golden Pond" memories. Zoom in on that puppy - is it a chickie? Awesome eagle shot too!

Yes...the word loon is followed instantaneously in my mind (mind mind? it was early) with "Oh Henry!!! The looooooooons!" Very neat.

And that eagle shot is wonderful! Were you as close as it looks??

When we bought this place on the lake the lawyer who handled the transaction said that he expected Katherine and Henry to walk into his office.  Close, but not quite.

Our lens is 10x so I wasn't that close to the eagle. Without the lens he would have been a pin spot.  I have tried to blow up the loon picture but when I get it large enough to decipher the bump on her back, all I can see is pixels.  The other reason we think it might be a chick is because they (the loon couple) weren't diving, as they usually do.  They seemed to be just cruising gracefully around the lake.

abe -- if you can send me the loon picture I can see what I can do in Photoshop to blow it up (I know of someone even better at photoshop that might be willing.....but I hate to volunteer people without their permission....but yes, this is some pressure, and you know who you are.):)

there is absolutely nothing like the sound of loons calling their mates.......thanks for sharing!

Here is a link to the Loon Cam in Minnesota:  http://www.mnbound.com/t-looncam.aspx

We have loons on our lake as well.  We are always excited to hear them calling and seeing the baby develop during the year.

Happy loon watching!

i've seen the large version of Abe's picture, and tried to enlarge it, but couldn't get the pixels right -- but I can say that it sure looks like Loonie Bambino on Mama's (or Papa's -- there are equal rights in Loon households) back.....

Wow, what a bunch of looney people here.

The behaviour (did I spell that right, Abe?) of the adult loon sure makes it seem like that was a little looney aboard.

Where I come from "loonie" means a Canadian Dollar and, until recently, that wasn't worth much. :P

Yes Debbie, you did spell behaviour right, bet spell checker didn't like it though  ;) Oops, my apologies to the web-mistress, the checker didn't balk at "behaviour" but it didn't like "loonie".

Abe

you darn Canadians....worried about a few spelling errors (blame that on Bayberry's partner -- I inherited his genes and not hers)......

P.S. send more of your dollars our way.:D  We love 'em here in Maine.

Okay, here is the picture of parent and child with the child now visible (barely) on her (or his) back.  For you techo-nerds, I converted the low quality JPG file to a BMP file (a much bigger file) and could blow it up quite a bit without losing the quality, i.e., without it turning into pixels.  When I did that, it is fairly clearly a baby on her back, not a raised feather (which was my alternative hypothesis).

Trust me, I did not add the spot on her back.;)

and having seen this picture even bigger, I can verify that it looks like the little guy is tucked quite snuggly into the parent's wings!
