Five years I've waited for this tree to bloom and it is now in its glory! While taking pics of the blooms soon to be genipas I hope, Mr. Bee was already all over it. Far less than a perfect shot, but closer...a little bit closer.

Yes, I DID mean quenepas! I constantly forget the spanish for what in the Virgin Islands is called genip's...tossing an a on the end...like forgetfulla mea! Or is that Italian?
Thanks, and please continue to correct my poor attempts at Espanol!

Debby, that was an interesting piece...I never heard them called Spanish Limes (which are...uh...spanish limes), and I never thought of the flesh as slimy or tasting like a lime, I'd say silky in texture and tasting more like along the lines of a melon flavor to me..and well worth the burst of taste for the work. Kids on St. Croix used to steal them off my trees, wrap up a bunch with a rag and sell them to me for a buck a bunch. Which I always bought...The kids here do the same thing (except not my trees) and I buy them too; great snack food, and always good when your mouth is full of the seed with juice dribbling down your chin when a tourist suddenly appears with a quiestion...
No prob with the rum soak, but the only way I know to open a quenepa/genip is to put it in my mouth and *crack* open the covering with my teeth...hope you don't mind.

Wow! That article got my curiousity going and I found this blog bit on the little jewel fruit and learned lots more...(I'm still, after being involved with the internet before there even WAS a WWW, amazed and delighted when I find a site like this...here are people from all over the place, with so many different life stories, gathered to have a discussion about this little fruit...schmazin'! A curiousity freak's dream come true). Thanks, Deb, for the poke in the arm.
