I was wondering why there were bits of my mock frangipani on the ground, and now I know why. The pruner monarch catepillars are hard at work here! Don't they know this is a FAKE frangipani? Hope they don't find the real one!

I am always so glad these caterpillars are so beautiful, because otherwise, they'd be totally creepy! They are BIG!

Oh, your poor frangapani.....those things are so gross -- your pictures are great, but until you see one of these suckers in person you can't imagine the size.
When I bought my house, the first week, I came home one day and cursed the neighborhood horses for eating all the leaves and blossoms off my large and beautiful frangapani. I sat down on my porch, and then I heard it......crunch, crunch, crunch. Curious, I followed the noise. About 40 feet away, I came to my frangapani and had my first face-to-face encounter with these monsters. I couldn't believe the noise they made, and there had to have been a hundred in the plant. I was told by elders that the plants would survive and even be healthier for their pruning, and they were right, but it sure is hard to imagine!!
I hope your garden doesn't get too hurt....

So, when one of these bad boys emerges from its cocoon, is it as a Magnificent Frigate Bird?
