Today involved a long walk in my secret spot.  It was one spectacular nature moment after another......possibily due to the full moon, the wild life was in full holiday mode today, and I was blessed to be part of some of it......most of what I saw and got pictures of I could identify (like the octopus so cleaverly disguised as a piece of the large rock I found him on).

But this is a mystery -- there were hundreds, if not thousands of these stars along the water's edge.....clearly the sun reflecting off something (maybe spawning in the water??)....and they moved along with the current like you would see stars moving in a planetarium....

I'd love to find out what they were.....they sure were magical!

Seriously, don't go in the water. I believe they are the larvae of thimble jellyfish, also mistakenly referred to as sea lice. On Ambergris Caye in Belize, in 2000, I was struck - snorkeling around in the turtle grass - they make you break out in hives in any area where you are not protected by swim suit/clothing/wetsuit. I'll be curious to see if your feet are hive-y tomorrow (assuming you walked in the shoreline). They are not usually visible to the naked eye. Could you see them, or did you only notice them on "film"? If you don't break out, let me know - I'd like to research further.

you know where the secret spot is.:)  You and I decided we wouldn't name it by location.

and yes, my mother, who was with me, and i both had what we thought were sand flea bites.....no hives today and as soon as we got rinsed off at home, no further problems.  we noticed the star reflection by the naked eye.  I thought it might be some kind of jelly fish.

wait till you see the octopus picture fromt the same secret spot.

and here is a juvenile conch.....check out his eyes and tongue feeding on the sea grass.  They also spit -- it was just my day to get spit on, but that's OK.....it really was magic every where I looked yesterday.

Very cool stuff! Sr. Pulpo looks a bit irritable for this close to Christmas.

Extremely cool shots, especially the octo. Did you get the Olympus 770SW? I know you said these were not taken underwater; just wondering if you got it.

WOW!!  Those are some really cool shots!!  I had to show my kids and my 7 year old wants to take the ones of the the octopus and the "stars" to show and share at school!!  They couldn't believe that they were taken above water and that they spit at you!!  Totally awesome, I want to go to your secret spot sometime, I swear I'll keep it a secret!!  Please??  Please??  Pretty please??  You found all these guys on my birthday, so it could be a little present to me??  Ok, I will try to regain some of my composure now and not beg so blatantly.  What can I offer you?  :D

no....couldn't justify it for a few pictures a year.....plus I know someone with one that i might be able to play with:D

was just developing more of the pictures yesterday and consulting my reef guide, and I'm thinking the strange stars were juvenile octopus (more like newborn larvae).  They were in the area where I found the octopus, and since my chief assistant and I didn't have excessive itching or stinging (and what we did have occurred out of the water -- more like sand fleas).....

I'll post more as I develop them.......

Interesting. . .you could be right. You should go back in a day or so to see if they're still there or if there are minute octos in the area.

I figured Sue deserved to be let on our little secret spot.

I will check it out again.....I was planning on going back today, but Mr. Toad threw my whole schedule off!  I had forgotton about how well schedules work in Culebra.

For free entertainment, here is one of the octopus spitting on me.....pretty much the only time I haven't minded being spit on!!!:D note the water activity on the left...

Gracias!  It was a really good day (except for the Browns :X), but Admin's pictures of the awesome critters and the full moon and Mars really made me yearn to be there instead.

Now that I think about it, the full  moon could explain a LOT from yesterday! ;)  Here's to a couple decades of always feeling "overserved" on Christmas Eve!! :D
