Perfect shot, Hillman, especially with just the four stars of the Southern Cross showing.

Hillman, that is a spectacular shot!

Ok, now the gauntlet is down, you two have done it and I have failed completely. Make note to self: this year, next year, get this photo.

hillman -- did you use a tripod?  maybe if I wake up early, and the Southern Cross is out, I'll drive down to Island Woman's house.  Better yet, maybe I'll drop a tripod off to her tonight.

Admin,  Yes, tripod, 30 second shutter speed, and self-timer for activating the shutter.  My first try at all these things.  I now understand why those photographers that take all those great night/star shots are paid well !!

LOL.....yup -- I found a 20-30 second exposure worked best for me with a tripod....and yes, it sure is something that people should get paid alot for -- lots of practise, stumbling around in the dark, and swearing.....but sure is magical!!!

I got my first 35mm in Vietnam a Kowa with one
interchangeable lens and no standard shoe for
others. In the Mekong Delta we would shoot
Huey Cobra's "working out" at night. You could
here the rat-a-tat-tat from their gatling guns
and if you shot with a wide aperture at 15 -
60 seconds ( I forget which worked out better )
because of the long exposure you would capture
the tracer rounds it looked like a
bending neon yellow-reddish snake.
My slides were unfortunately lost in "89
but I googled Huey Cobra and nighttime tracers
and came uo with this photo, although our
gunships were generall firing straight down
and had a more mesmerizing effect until you realized
what might be happening on the ground end of things.
