Galilea settled in easily to her new life with Anne, Sofie, and the green parrot called Pilgrim. She loved her new home, espeically the big green chair that she soon claimed as her very own special sleeping spot. She got a new collar, new leash, new toys, new beds (for home and at work), a new extended family, and even a new name! After much deliberation (and a few tries at other names that were eventually discarded), Anne finally decided that Galilea would henceforth be called DARBY. In fact, she even recieved a middle name and is now fully known as Darby Louise, or just Darby Lou.
Even more importantly (though a new name is pretty important for sure), she was given her last heartworm medication. It didn't taste very good, but if all goes according to plan, she will FINALLY be able to begin playing with sister Sofie soon. Both of them can hardly wait!
Another step that Darby has taken in her new life is that she is slowly getting used to people she doesn't know. Anne takes her to work with her every single day, and she now knows she can count on getting a treat from Anne's clients if she is brave enough to take it from them. She still will not let anyone else pet her, but that will come in time - one step at a time! She also went to her first appointment with her new doctor, and was as fit as she could be, all things considered.
Finally, Anne sent a swab from Darby's cheek to a special company that will test her DNA. That means that soon Anne and everyone else will know just what kind of dog Darby is. Many guess she is mostly Dalmatian, but Anne isn't so sure. She thinks maybe some Whippet, or even a little bit of cattle dog, but who knows until the test results come back.
All in all, things are going very well for the Sato once named Galilea. She is crazy about her new mom, which is very very good because her new mom is just as crazy about her! They are both so very thankful to everyone who helped them to find each other, and for all the important work that they do every day to rescue so many of her fellow island dogs!

Great story! Another sato finds an amazing home (geeze, I'm thinking of putting myself up for adoption one of these days...these dogs have it GOOD!)

Thanks for the great updates! We're so glad to see "Darby Lou" in her new home w/her final new name (she had 3 different ones here in Culebra). She was a sweet pup & spent her last night on Culebra with us  so that we could be sure she would be ready to go on the first ferry in the am when she ferried, drove, & flew off to her new home! Thanks to everyone involved in making this happen!!

We are now fostering a new pup named "Mango." He's been on the streets a long time & had some tough breaks, but is a love . He's got a big, cuddly head & a very skinny body (he's been fending for himself for quite some time), but is friendly & happy & looking for his forever home! Contact us at the Palmetto Guesthouse if you might know of anyone who would like to meet Mango!

Terrie, is he the big black dog?? We had that one in Sue and Tuck's yard (being fed and played with until they get back) and he got out.

Ok, thanks. Haven't seen this other guy around (I wasn't down there today, but he seems like a big sweetie...showed up after the weekend, as often happens). We'll keep an eye out for him.

Hey MJ.  Just got on line and saw that "BRUNO" got out of the fence.  Any sightings of him?  He and little "Crunchy" got along famously.  He is such a love.  If anyone finds him, please put him back in, as I would like to fatten him up another 30 lbs. and then find a good home for him after the summer.  Chris is feeding him in the yard, along with the cats.  Keep me posted.   Sue

Shall do! I'll pass the word along, and I'm sure Chris has as well. Crunchy is enjoying the yard, but misses his buddy!

Terrie and anyone else who knew my Darby before she came to Ohio,

I'd love to hear any more background information on her that you care to share.  A fuller understanding about her past could be helpful in transitioning into her new life here with me.  Plus, I'd just love to know as much as I can about her for my own curiosity's sake!  ;-)

Many thanks, and for all the work you do for her sato brethren in general,

Anne

Good afternoon Anne,

Darby Lou hung around the next street over in our neighborhood for a while. A local woman fed her off & on & she had 2 litters of puppies (which we shipped to the states) before we were able to catch her & take her to the vet clinic. Another woman, who owns Barbara Rosa's restaurant also fed/watched out for her as she frequently went into her yard to relax.

She was known as "Bubbles," & "Blinky" here in Culebra. The final night before her departure she was among the missing & we were a bit worried as she was to go on the 6:30 am ferry w/another pup for shipment to OH. We found her late in the afternoon, I gave her a flea/tick bath & then she slept in her crate, scarred, but sweet on her last evening here.

We took her to the vets in Fajardo on the way to the airport for a final checkup & travel papers & then drove to San Juan where she & her traveling companion dog (who also has a great home now!) got checked in for their flight!

Thank you so much for taking her in & being her forever family!
Terrie

Hello to "Bubbles" from her friends
and yard pals the Black Egyptians, denizens of
Barbara Rosa's from right to left"
Larry, Curly, and Moe.

Bubbles was always polite and let the cats
eat, carefully monitoring their progress,
always happy to clean up and Barbara
would reward her with a belly rub.

Thank you SO much for sharing more of Bubbles-Blinky-Galilea-Darby's story with me!!! (Another name I considered was Molina. I'm told that Molino is the Spanish word for cowlick, and she sports a dandy one on the back of her head for sure!) It really does help me to make sense of her wariness of most everyone but me. (Though I'm not quite sure why she trusted ME so completley from the get-go) She's bonded so strongly with me - I've never seen a dog so overjoyed just to have me walk in from getting the mail or to simply wake up in the morning! Sometimes I think she's going to wag her tail right off! LOL! But with anyone else, it's just baby steps. I'm confident that once she's completely heartworm free and can go out for proper walks and really let loose and PLAY, that she will begin to let her guard down a bit more with others.
Honestly, I've been fostering for a while with the group that Sue also belongs to and I never ever even came close to considering keeping any of them before, though I loved them as they were mine while they were with me - TEMPORARILY! She really blindsided me by how much we connected. And I know she already knew she was staying put long before I let myself admit it, too. ;-)

The vet says she's about 18 months old, maybe less. Does that seem right to you kind follks down there? Did any of those puppies resemble her? I would love to have seen them! Sue, btw, fostered the last of a litter of NINE pups that were born in my home. I kept them and their mama here until they were about 4 1/2 weeks old, then they went to the rescue proper. When only one was left, Sue and her family took him in until they found him a wonderful home.

Sorry for rambling on so. But before wrapping up, please give a warm hello back to the three mus-kitteers -Larry, Curly and Moe, and also to all Darby's Culebra friends who looked after her in whatever way they could. I promise I'll make it worth everyone's while by giving her the best home she could hope for!!!

Anne and Darby
