A visitor to the Culebrita lighthouse recently was shocked and appalled at the trash and graffitti left behind -- some of it apparently from the days when the Coast Guard had stewardship of the lighthouse.  The lighthouse has been off limits to visitors in recent years because of safety factors.

An investigation into the vandalism has started and cleanup volunteer efforts will be organized and details posted here on the forum.

As background, the Culebra Foundation, which has just recently opened the Culebra Museum, and is the organization that for several years has dedicated themselves to preserving Culebra's history and culture, is very involved in the Lighthouse.  I have attached a letter below from Juan Romero explaining the history a little bit more.

I've been asked to remind everyone that the lighthouse is COMPLETELY off limits, and noone should be inside the building.

It should be the responsiblity of the Municipality of Culebra, who owns the lighthouse and adjacent lands to both monitor the safety factors as well as organize a cleanup crew, and help with the Foundacion's efforts to restore this important building.
