If you lived in Culebra during the '70s or before, you would have known about 'La Tintorera'. Tintorera is both a big shark and a female shark, which would make sense as far as this story goes (if it's true that female sharks grow bigger than males). There were many stories of sightings of La Tintorera, always confined to the bay as far out as 'El Bajo/El Bajo Largo' (the longer reef that people now call Dakity).
So here's my story:
The way I remember it, I'm at 'El AquĆ Me Quedo' - now 'El Batey' - hanging out with my grandparents, when my grandmother sees something zipping by (wake/wash?). My uncle had a little runabout in those days and she figures it might be him, so she goes across the street to flag him down. Suddenly she starts screeming because, over between the docks of Miranda and Santaella, La Tintorera is thrashing around, churning up the bottom, making it look (in her eyes) like there's blood in the water. Now, remember, she thinks she just saw my uncle so, in her mind, La Tintorera is having him for lunch . A bunch of us see La Tintorera thrashing about in shallow water, and run over there to get a closer look. By the time I get there it's gone. I was told a chucho (spotted eagle ray) was found on shore close by and that La Tintorera had probably been chasing it. I seem to remember Marcos Villanueva being present, but I was just a kid and this could all be the product of a very vivid imagination.

| Now that is a cool story, and one I had never heard......was Sharkey around during those days? When did he arrive on Culebra?

He wasn't around yet, and I'm not quite sure when he showed up. Early '80s maybe?

Sharky showed up in the 80's by way of St.Croix. He had a
street jewelry business there, and according to him, had shot a
man who was trying to rob him. H e previously had been a chef
in Chicago where he had come from his native Cuba after the
revolution. He had always claimed he and Fidel Castro were 1st
cousins.
His father was supposed to be the brother of Fidel's father.
And his name was Armado Castro. At the original BarbaraRosa's
he made Caricoli (snail) stew, it was the best soup/stew I have
ever eaten. The only thing I remember other than the Caricolis
was olives and a little coconut milk.

Caracoles are soooo good. Last I remember they were going for $10-$12/lb. Any idea what they're up to now?
If you cook them in the shell, when you pull them out the 'sack' in some of them is green, and some people eat it as a 'delicacy'. I wonder if it has any aphrodisiac powers, like the 'crystal' in the conch .

Anyone besides me think it's interesting that Sharky named his pooch after his second cuz? I personally flipped Fidel a piece of crust from a Chuck's pizza...

Boquicaballo, thanks for reminding me how to spell Caracoles. The
crystal you referred to in conch, isn't there also a crystal vein in
lobster? It is reportedly an aphrodisiac also. Here's a picture of
Sharky and Fidel that appeared in the CC.Attachment: sharky&fidel.png (Downloaded 35 times)

Nice picture! At one time I had a couple of pictures of him circa '82 with a couple of sharks he had caught. Not sure if they're still around; I might have given them to him.
I didn't know about lobster's crystals, so I can't comment, but it sounds like a good assignment for you. Let us know what you find out.

the food in Culebra is so good, do we really have to be talking about green seafood.....
I remember when I had the Cafe, so of the locals hanging out at Lilly's brought me some soup.....as I was starting to eat it, I was told it was based on basically pig guts.....
