1. Who was Sharky and Lana in Culebra?
Sharky was Fidel's Dad. Lana was my merengue teacher.

| Supposedly Culebra was the original name of Vieques, when Culebra was known as "Passage Island" because it lies half way between St. Thomas and Puerto Rico. At one time someone labelled a chart incorrectly and gave Vieques' name to Culebra (which means "snake" in Spanish). Others say the shape of the island resembles a curled up snake....

Flamenco still has left over US Navy garbage that they never cleaned up, which is typical for the organization. Tanks are left over from the days the Navy bombed the island for practice -- there is a whole area at the end of Flamenco which is off limits because of unexploded ordiance. It is not uncommon for snorkelers off of Flamenco to see coral encrusted bombs.
There were huge protests, including a wooden chapel being built at Flamenco, from the Culebresen people (and a few gringos that may or may not also be known as dozzerhuggers), and the Navy decided to move it's operations to Vieques.
Don't let anyone tell you the US Government cleans up after itself!!!
The rusty tanks, tho, have become very much a monument and adopted by the local community and thanks to the talented artistic work of Jorge Acevedo, the tanks are now one of the more photographed areas on Culebra.Attachment: IMG_2776.jpg (Downloaded 51 times)

| Oh My God, your answers are also a teaching with photos and all!!!!, well Culebra's name as I understand was taken from the dedication of the island to the Bishop of Toledo named Saint Ildefonso de la Culebra.

LOL....do I get an "A"???
Doug was joking about Sharkey -- Sharkey liked to tell some tales, some of them tall, and some of them true!! And I'm sure Doug was taught many things by Lana......here she is semi-dancing, semi-holding up David McGuire (or is she holding him up?)Attachment: david&Lana.jpg (Downloaded 44 times)

| yes you get an A, with all these memorabilia. Also Sharkey used to say that he was the kid of the Old Man and the Sea that Hemingway got inspired in his novel. Who knows? Was Lana the lady that inone of the huricanes she had an interview one day at the newspaper that she used to live by the beach with a homemade tent? Did you ever met Elisa, she used to rent bikes and snorkle gear nex to Kokomo Hotel.

I think you're thinking of Johanna, who really did live off the land out by Dakity and has lived a very colorful life!
Of coarse I know Elisa -- I had the cafe in Kokomo -- she's a wonderful woman, and I miss her!Attachment: IMG_0884.jpg (Downloaded 40 times)

I was digging through my old pix to find one of Sharky and Fidel. So far - no go. I do have a Sharkey t-shirt with Fidel on it. If Fidel wasn't Sharky's child, he was his best buddy.

| Elisa now is involved in helping with the production of some films, and also taking people to Peru. She was working in the West with channel 6 project to train community workers to develop documentaries for divulgation of situations in their communities. She is always busy in interesting things. She is a good friend of mine. Right now she is living in Rincon.
