Back when the navy was bombing Culebra, the police station used to be up on the highest point in town. It's the building that sits above/behind the C.D.T.. Right now I believe it houses the phone company. Anyway, the way you knew not to go to the north side of the island (anywhere they bombed) was when they raised a red flag up there.

I once went up to the O.P. on one of these days and was pretty impressed with the range/accuracy of the mortar. It sat right next to the actual observation station (the one with the big glass windows facing Molinos), on the side where you climb the ladder to get to the roof. If you look down from there, I think you can still see the platform it was based on. In order to signal the begining of maneuvers/bombing, they would fire this mortar onto one of the targets which were, besides the tanks, big white targets painted on the cliffs with lime (cal). So they fire this thing...poof!...and you're sitting there waiting for something to happen and, after what seems like forever, you see it hit way over on one of the targets on the cliffs of Molinos.

Just thought I'd throw this out there, instead of LURKING.

so you were LURKING at the helipad??? seems like this might be a trait of yours that has been going on for years

:D

I can remember as a kid seeing the bright trails of the bombs going over head (i.e. downtown dewey -- we used to stay at Villa Boheme with Jack Vincent in those good old days).

I didn't realize you'd been going to Culebra that long! Mr. Vincent was very much liked/respected.

Hey...do you remember the fish tanks that John Dinga had over there on the way to your parent's water house? I don't know if anyone else has done it, but I think he's the only person who has exported tropical fish from Culebra. It was Dinga, no?

BTW, the image came out as a black square (to me). ***Got it now!***

Is that you holding the reigns? Who's on the horse? Who's horse?

I just posted the picture again -- it's a young, very sexy Laurie with her brother. Bayberry should be able to tell us whose horse it was....I forget.

Yes, Jack Vincent was one of those rare breeds -- a very special man, and he certainly was responsible for starting my long-term love affair with Culebra. My family was one of the first gringo tourists to frequent Culebra....those were special days.

Yup -- I first visited in 1970, and yes, it was John Dinga who did the tropical fish export, and I remember his tanks well -- the one in his house (by Lilly's now) was really impressive.....

John surely was one of the larger characters to come thru Culebra....

I think that Jack Vincent borrowed the horse from Cosme Pena.    Jack and Cosme took admin's father and me around the island in a cattle truck.   They introduced us to the east end and the Feliciano finca between Zoni and Brava, where we now live.  Cosme also gave us his home-made island cheese.

We stayed with Jack in 1970 and 1971, and then we and some Princeton friends bought the shack across the street, but slightly east, of the Fishbach property.   We still own it, but it is a much sturdier version than the old shack, which was totally detroyed by Hugo.    The road from town wasn't paved and Punta Aloe was just being started.    Cayo was filmed in large part in the "new" shack.

Glad for your memories, boquicaballo and others. I feel like the new in-law, sitting at a family reunion, enjoying the reason why I knew I wanted to be a part of the family almost the first moment I stepped ashore...mas, por favor, mi amigo
(the real moment was when Ishmal <sp>, my taxi guy while I was staying at the campground - mainly I'd met Culebrense, and felt treated like I'd been waited for like a long lost grandchild - stopped the taxi halfway between town and Flamenco and indicated that I should get out of the taxi...a few thoughts went through my mind - hey, I'd been living on STX and knew a few taxi guys! - but he'd been incredible for days, refusing to let me pay, sharing beers - ok, he insisted on buying the beers plus never hitting on me - at Happy Landing, so I wasn't really worried - much.
He gets out and points at the sky...there was a full moon and his smile was almost as big..."Culebra," he said, "Tranquillo." I was almost in joy tears as we got back in the van...and the next day, went back to STX, to pack up and come *home*)
I love these stories! And the pics...even though, sorry, not sexy but sure cute!

Ditto, MJ, Ditto. I feel like we missed a lot showing up in the 21st century, and I regret it every day that we can't be there every day. :(

I LOVE the picture!  So cute!  I am with you MJ and Debbie---I want to hear more, more!!  We, too, miss being there every day and feel like like we are playing "catch up" because we came in so late in the game with our love of the island.  It is so fascinating to me to hear the stories of island past, since all we know is island present and we plan on being there for island future!

 Any more pictures to share???

I'm going to start digging. Flores, one of the Navy era political
prisoners and husband of the CC EspaƱol Editor Rosarito used
to catch fish for Dinga. Dinga was very involved with the ouster
of the Navy, which surprised a lot of people because he was a
draft dodger on the lam from the states. Here's a picture of John as they
were cutting barbed wire. That's his wife Susan to the left, his little
boy in the back, and Jane Daubon (Harbor View) behind and to the right.
The CC new site will have an incredibe archive that I have been
collecting for years.

Wow, that ferry picture REALLY shows some *time gone by*. Seems 1985 wasn't that long ago - guess it's that *gettin' old* thing. I still can't believe anyone BORN in 1985 can have a driver's license yet...
Love the protesters! You meant Digna, right? Or have I been wrong ever since I got here???

That's what I thought and that's what Uhlenbrock wrote.

great pics Jim and Hillman!!

LOL...it does get confusing -- Digna is Willie's wonderful mother. There was also a gringo couple from Boston, John and Sue Digna who owned the building that is now Elliott's home next door to Lillys (used to be Coral Reef Guesthouse).

Just for the hell of it,
From the left, A.J., Old Tom, yours truly, Wendy, and Barbara.

The round object on the back wall was a rope-edged table originally
belonging to Dick & Tanya. I salvaged it from the other side of the
Bay and one night a few months later, Dick and Tanya walked in and
said "Hey that's my dining table!" It had blown away in Hugo and I was
desperate for decorations for BR's. They liked the new idea, we bought
them a couple of subs and they said "keep it"

Wow -- that's a blast to wake me up this morning with a big old smile!!!! That's almost a scary pic!! Wendy as a young lass (how is she/where is she? I pray for her and so many others that she is safe) A.J. and Tom....LOL.....I'll never forget one night, when as many, out at Seabourne, Tanya went down for the count before Dick, and we shoveled her into their Buggy (with no roof). Dick and we continued up at the bar for quite a while, and Tanya kept on yelling from the car "Dickie, it's time to go home, NOW" (and a few other things which I'll leave out and to the reader's imagination or memory if you were there), and Dick kept on smiiling and ordering more.......those were the good days for sure.....thanks for sharing! I'm actually embarrassed -- I live 15 minutes from Dick and Tanya, and have only seen them once -- I'm putting them on the list to do right now.

I'll try and think of my favorite original BR story -- there were so many, I don't know where to start.....well the first burgers available on island (and great, juicy tasty ones at that) is a great place to start --- those were the days of simple pleasures brought so much joy:D
