Free internet access in San Juan
Posted: Saturday, May 26, 2007 - 07:57 PM

SAN JUAN (AP) – As of January, San Juan residents who have laptop computers will have free internet access at the public plazas of the capital city.
The initiative of San Juan Mayor Jorge Santini is aimed at getting more people to visit those public spaces.
"We will promote public plazas, revitalizing the tradition of getting together in the town. Old San Juan plazas, including Colón, de Armas and San José, will have free internet access,” the mayor said in a press release.
Santini specified the plazas in Old San Juan will have free internet access in August, becoming the first ones to have the service in the city.
The city hall is expecting that in January the same will happen at the Plaza de la Convalecencia, in Río Piedras; in part of the Universidad Ave. and at the Plaza Antonia Quiñones, Plaza del Ancla and Ventana al Mar, in Condado.
The plan also includes the market places of Santurce and Río Piedras, which will probably have more visitors after the plan comes to live.
"All the plazas will be more crowded, the flow of people will be higher, as well as the sales in and around those places,” Santini said.
The city hall, which did not specify the cost of that project, said it will also establish a plan to reinforce security and install more lamp posts in those places.

Very cool. More access, better lighting, safe gathering places. Sounds good.

But the reasoning seems a little wanky, to me anyway...

"revitalizing the tradition of getting together in the town..."

Somehow the image of people getting together means people interacting, in my mind...rather than people sitting around with their laptops *together* - maybe they will text each other on their phones to come over and look at some bit of news or photos on their laptops? Maybe so! Sometimes I'm such a Luddite.
I'm trying to imagine the PO & plaza chatters with laptops...

whatever happened to a good game of dominos and good friends idling away an afternoon in the shade at the island's plazas?

who remembers the "good old days" when our plaza was actually used on a regular basis as a social/community center.....I remember some pretty special nights of dancing on the platform that surrounded the plaza with some great live music.....and happy hour consisted of meeting up at the plaza and watching the cargo ferry come in and on Fridays, checking out the weekend visitors.....

and while I don't go back nearly as far as you and so many others, especially the ones born here that I've been blessed enough to get to know a bit and to hear stories from,( but at least I got a taste before the Wall went down and so many other changes so recently)...enjoying Ernesto's movies on a sheet was good too! The tree in the plaza still is shade for conversations...
Sigh.

well, I remember when movies were shown on the side of Rafi's store (I think -- I was a young lass way back then), back in the early 70's.....but Ernesto's were fun as well, and a great time for community building.....and if only more people used that wonderful tree and it's shade -- that tree has withstood many a hurricane and generations and could tell thousands of stories if only we would listen....

In writing the editorial for the May issue I interviewed quite
a few people including two well known elders. One lamented
the loss of the plaza and when I mentioned the idea of free
internet access on the island he looked at me like I was crazy.
MJ you are right-on. Our Plaza (or what's left) should be for
socializing. Old San Juan's Plaza will be a magnet for thieves. What
a mix, more police, people with their noses in computers, and
thieves lurking. And what will the cruise ship types say, "I could
have stayed home and saw this"
By the way, some tourists need to stay in touch, but the guest
houses can take care of that or Excetera.

I seriously doubt we'll have that trouble in our plaza...we won't tell anyone if they do such a silly thing...or we can all email the mayor and say...more trash cans around the island and beaches please..like the ones stacked up at the municipality depot or whatever it is on the road to Fox's Lair....
