and here is a Barred Owl -- these are the ones that have the wierdest call I've ever heard. Mr. and Mrs. live in my woods, and they get chatting to each other and you can't believe the racket!

How big would you say the Bared Owls are?

the book says 21", and the noise they make definately come out of a BIG owl.....one of them was just barking (sorry, but that's the only description I can give) outside.

Those are great shots! Very pretty woods, reminds me of my bro's place in NC, where I saw the only wild turkeys I've ever seen.

thanks -- I do have pretty special woods around my house (the turkeys are on my road)....it's certainly a nature lovers paradise, but can get pretty hairy like last week when I had the Barred owls carrying on and the coyotoes howling right outside. My domestic wanna-be coyotes joined in from inside......I was ready to kill 'em all. And turkey p..p is just not fun to step in.

Speaking of wild life, we went out this morning and discovered that a bear had tipped over our garbage can (44 gallon drum) and strewn it around.  What a mess.  Luckily there was only one bag in the can at the time.

Turkeys and barred owls are our neighbors!  My black halloween cat came flying in the house yesterday, agitated and fat-tailed, and jumped up to look out the window. There were a couple wild turkeys in "her" domain - the back yard. The barred owls do bark and scream when mating, but their regular call seems to ask "Who, who, who cares for YOU-all". Loves me some large birds...

I can tell you that their mating scream right outside of your bedroom window in the middle of the night can cause near-death experiences. This summer, I had one literally perched on the dormer roof 1 foot from my window. The other cool thing about these guys is they don't seem to have a healthy respect for humans, and don't immediately fly off (although when they do, they are magnificent)!

Our travels this year were a couple of weeks travelling in the outback in Western Australia so we won't be able to make it to Culebra (this year). :(   However, we have already booked a place for next year: we will be there for 4 months starting in December 08.  (We may not go often, but when we do, we stay a while.) Needless to say, we are really looking forward to it.:D

I have no idea when I'll be going in late '08/early '09, but I hope I get the chance to say hello in person.

That would be great Doug (or anyone one else)!  Anytime between 1 Dec 08 and 31 March 09 - we'll be there, sitting on the beach in front of  Melones Beach House (or I might be dozing in the hammock on the back porch).

Best excuse I've heard in a while! Got any pictures to share? I'm with Doug - will try to meet up with you in person in January '09! I still feel guilty about not catching up with you last March. :(

Wow, tough decision, choosing one or two pictures.  The pictures range from vast scenes to wild roos to close-ups of flowers.  Okay, the attached picture was taken when we were about 100 miles from any human habitation in any direction (as far as we knew).  Of course, as soon as we stopped to take the picture another car appeared.  On most days we might see only one car, if we were lucky, otherwise we didn't see any.

And this one is me beside the vehicle we were using.  We were camped at the base of the Kennedy Range National Park.  BYW my wife, Sue, is the photographer in the family.
