After setting up for the Expo and working in the Ricoh booth for almost the entire show, I was able to cruise the South Hall of the Moscone Center in San Francisco and deliver this EXCLUSIVE report for the Go To Culebra With Your Mac forum.
Let's Get It Started, Uh-Huh!
Steve Jobs' keynote address focused on four areas.
- Time Capsule, a WiFi, network appliance for remotely backing up multiple computers which works hand-in-hand with Time Machine (the ultra-simple method to backup your Mac if it's running OS X v10.5 Leopard).
- iPhone (free) and iPod Touch ($20) software updates with several new features including the GPS-like GoogleMap functions by triangulating from both cell towers and public WiFi hotspots.
- Movie Rentals on ITMS (iTunes Music Store)!!!! ALL of the major film studios have agreed to participate in this deal which allows you to download either SD or HD movies and giving you 30-days to watch them before expiration, but you must complete watching the movie with 24-hours of starting/pushing the PLAY button, but you can move the rental from computer to iPod and vice-versa withing viewing window. Also announced "Take 2" of AppleTV which allows you to download movies directly to the AppleTV (initial version required download to to a Mac or PC first, then transfer to appliance) - same rental source as ITMS but purchase interface is now built into AppleTV (just like DirecTV and Dish pay-per-view UI).
- MacBook Air - Apple showed off the world's thinnest computer in their massive booth located in their usual haunt at the center of the expo floor. If you've been waiting for a powerful, small, lightweight and ABSOLUTELY STUNNING sub-compact notebook, the wait IS OVER! Good thing they will not be shipping them for another two weeks, or I would have left the Bay area with one under my arm. A new Mac Pro tower was introduced the week before MWE boasting eight (8) processors and sporting nearly 3-times as much computing power as the last supercomputer built by Cray.
Art Of Office
- Microsoft launched Office 2008 for OS X - the very last of the major apps to become Intel-native and sponsored MacWorld Blast on Tuesday evening - the first mega-party of the week - at $40/person for open bar, live music and finger food.
- Adobe celebrated their 25th anniversary by launching nothing new except Adobe Elements for Macintosh v6 (BTW - 22 years ago I completed the PostScript Driver course at Adobe after attending MWE 1986).
- Quark announced QuarkLabs - a new portal featuring innovative XPress 7 XTensions that are not initially being released as commercial products - and began distributing updates to Interactive Designer that support Leopard.
- FileMaker (an Apple-owned company) was demonstrating Bento - a personal organizer software product - selling for $49. This product is VERY COOL, but don't buy it unless you are running Leopard - OS X v10.5 is REQUIRED!
HotSpot Printer
- The coolest mobile printing product to ever be conceived was launched and demonstrated live and in technicolor at the Ricoh booth where they unveiled its new line of HotSpot printers able to print documents from any wireless-enabled location or device. The SP C410DN-KP color printer and SP 4100N-KP monochrome model provide reliable laser printing from laptops, cell phones or PDAs without the need to download or install drivers or additional software. How does Ricoh perform such magic? These printers leverage Ricoh's Embedded Software Architecture and leading developer of mobile printing solutions PrinterOn's PrintSpots internet-based mobile printing service. All printer enhancements are preconfigured and software preloaded, allowing for quick setup and little (if any) technical support. Each printer has its own Web page to upload files to be printed and e-mail address to which files can be forwarded for printing.
Send In The Clowns
This year, there were a LOT of gadget manufacturers with accessories for iPods, iPhones and MacBooks - maybe twice as many as previous couple of expos. One of the coolest is HangMan from Neat Products, a caribiner-like device that locks into the dock connector of any iPod (most have this except for iPod Shuffles) and iPhone and allows you to clip your device to anything (belt clip/loop, laptop case, backpack, piercing, etc.) wrap around earbud wires in a tidy fashion. Although I resisted the urge to buy one, I did end up coming home with three new iPhone cases ;-)

Pictures won't do these items justice, especially the Invisible Shield, so here are hyperlinks.

BTW - Steve and I haven't talked in years and I don't think he is ready right now to begin the healing process

so I'm gonna ask THE question.....you got three -- so I'm assuming that the beautiful Diving Debbie gets one for her new iPhone and Cleo gets the third for hers?

No, it's because he breaks every case he's ever had. Trust me, all three will have been used by year end.
I don't really care to have an iPhone. Cool gadget, but I don't think it's worth the price, and I sure don't care to switch to AT&T.
