Hello,
Does anybody have any experience with the Flamenco campground? We are going to stay there and are wondering if there is anything we should be aware of. It's hard to tell from the few pics we've seen...but are there many trees there? Any shade? Does the site get real crowded at the end of April? Any info helps.
Thanks! Gracias!

you'll miss the worst of the crowds and camping is a great way of enjoying Culebra!! There is shade in the campground area, although very little on the beach itself.
There has not been much rain at all on Culebra (and the island needs rain badly), so the bugs will be minimal, but if you have a favorite bug spray, you'll want to have some just as insurance. Avon's Skin So Soft oil is my preferred one and a more natural alternative than OFF.
there are great food stands at the beach, but you'll want to do some exploring in town, so you can take a taxi (called publicos) or rent bikes for your visit.
You're going to have a great time!!

Camping at the beach is where I fell in love with Culebra. Was the sand hard? Yep. Were the showers working? Nope. (I wasn't Puerto Rican, I didn't have camping down to the fine science they do...or even close. It was still magic).
There were no food stands happening, the bathrooms didn't work and neither did the showers, etc. But it was the most incredible camping experience...going to sleep with the sound of small waves on the sand, the air clean and clear, waking up to the music of, oh my, horses! wandering around my tent.
Yes, that was a mere five years ago, and things have changed so I can't say for sure what it is like now (...except I know the waves are still hitting the beach and that would make it worth anything else...for me). Depends on the site you get about the shade/tree thing - it sounds like your time could be good for selecting what you want. But a tarp or a sarong can make shade and you can make it what you want it to be...Enjoy, and let us know how it goes!

Five years May 11th (I NEVER remember dates but that is my daughter's birthday, so it clicks beyond my normal *uh, it was really hot/cold/rainy/foreign world/dunno* memory sparkers)...so close enough. And...it HAS been a lifetime...this one, anyway
