How about some of the different kinds of beans = habichuelas

red beans = habichuelas rojas

chick peas = garbanzos

white beans = habichuelas blancas

pigeon peas = gandules

black bean soup = sopa de habichuelas negras

Let me know if you are interested in this and any words you need. Maybe I can come up with the Spanish version.

Great!!  I kinda let slide my Spanish Word of the Day -- this is more fun, and probably more accurate with local words.

1 Month and 5 days until arroz y habichuelas negras --  YUMMY!

Ah, black beans! cuban black beans. Years ago Paul and MaryEllen
from New York, entertainers, sent Barbara and I an Anniversary
present, The Sugar Reef Cook Book written by some friends in
New York who owned....The Sugar Reef Rest! The book was a
medley of Carbbean recipes they had collected including
Jerk Chicken, Gallaloo, etc. But our favorite one was a Black
Bean recipe, unfortunately we lost the cookbook in Georges
but I remember one very interesting thing. It was a somewhat
standard recipe, but incuded this, take one whole orange and
spike it, embed cloves, like 15 maybe, (it looks like a sputnik)
and drop the whole thing in the beans for cooking. Yum Yum
For those of you too young to understand the sputnik ref., here's
the idea.

And then, with our habichuelas, we need some arroz? What else will go in a meal here?
One thing my Dad used to put in our habichuelas negros was ground hamburger, seasoned with a LOT of garlic (ajo?) and served with yellow rice (he lived in Havana for quite a bit of his growing up years and we ate that a lot).
Then dessert would sometimes be guava paste and cream cheese, with cuban crackers (the ones that look like little bowls, more white than tan, bland as hell)
So...how would that be in Spanish? In English, it's delicious!

Cuban Black Beans with ground meat, very interesting, if the ground
meat was sseasoned properly. I'm going to try it, if it works out
I'll bring some to the Thanksgiving Fest.

Sounds great to me, I haven't made it in ages (there's sauteed onions in the meat too  - yellow rice, ground beef, black beans - optional: finely minced red onions on the side to add on top along with a few drops of red wine vinegar ).

Jim, That one got me to wondering.  What makes up a typical Culebra Thanksgiving meal?  I have a feeling butterball turkeys don't get south of Miami.

Susie tells me there is yuca in the stuffing...and I'm sure there are more side dishes typical of Culebrense cooking...c'mon Paws Nest...what's a typical PR Turkey Day menu...in Spanish (if you tell, you don't have to bring a turkey to dinner!)
