OK, so you're wondering what caused the havoc in Saucy Contessa.

so, I left the shop (thank god) around 3 this afternoon.  stopped and got milk and eggs at the grocery store.  drove the 15 minutes home in semi-relaxed mode before an important meeting tonight.  Figured I had time for a cup of tea and a walk (it was beautiful and sunny this afternoon).  When I got home the fun began.....

as I walked in the door, my phone was ringing (now that I'm home, I find that I had messages from the bank, two of my store neighbors and the police).  I answered the phone  --- "Hi Saucy, it's Chief Hatch with the Boothbay Harbor Police".  What??????????  why are the police calling me???  well......

a woman who was clearly out of control, ran into my building.  yup, ran into my building.

the above picture is Central Maine Power.  Yup, not only did she take out the street sign, which flew about 40 feet, she left 300' of skid marks -- from well before my building, up onto the sidewalk, through the street sign, into my building, and then veering the opposite way and heading for a parking lot before stopping.  She took out all the power lnes, and all three meters.  So, now we've got a car crash, and arcing live power lines.  so the police need me to get into the store to turn off the power.

so I go.  I'm not really thinking it's a that big a deal.  I already know the woman is OK, although having been transported to the hospital.  But when I got into the main intersection in town, and could see my store surrounded by fire trucks, police cars and people, I realized that it was more serious than I had thought.

so, I'm still calm as I pull up.  then I go inside my store.

trust me, when a crazy woman drives into a wood building holding 100's of hot sauce/BBQ sauce/salsa-in-glass-bottles, it's not pretty.  nope, no pretty at all.

so, my only words of wisdom are, Island Woman, you are sitting in a very dangerous place.:D

so, I am finally home -- I left most of the mess inside to go to my meeting -- trust me, after the winter I've had, I was pretty close to a nervous breakdown (guess i still am)......

turns out the woman who did this probably doesn't have a drivers license, and was on prescription pills.....and she totaled (yup, totaled) a Jeep Cheerokee doing this.....she was going really, really fast.  yes, that is my rain gutter in the street.

so now I'm off to have that cup of tea.....and to go to sleep before tomorrow's adventures begin.

Oh oh oh :( That's worse than when I made a batch of sauce and it was in Ann's store and because I forgot to do the water bath, it blew up...one bottle by one bottle (a case worth of it, but luckily most of it was still inside a box...blowing up) over the walls, the rug, the stand in the middle...I thought THAT was bad (um, it was bad, even though Ann and I laugh semi-hysterically about it now, with rue for flavoring).

I am SOOOOO sorry! Yes, that could take you to the edge for a bit (how wise to do as the Brits do and have tea, they say it works for everything). But I truly feel bad for the woman, she must be as much of a mess in her head as your store is right now...and your store will be cleaned up and made right...who knows if she will ever be (even if you want to wring her twisted neck right now, and I don't blame you for the feeling).

This too shall pass...and it will be a funny/sad story you'll tell in the future. In the meantime, I hope for Spring for you fast fast fast, and that we could be there to help you clean up - it WAS a sunny and beautiful day and that is the part to hold onto. Not trying to be a Pollyanna here...just...what the hell? You might as well laugh, it's too ridiculous to have made up. It's just supposed to happen to "someone else".

LOL.....I had forgotten that story.  and I remember seeing the aftermath -- so my stoe looked like Paradise, only multiply it by about 200 bottles.

Luckily for the woman, she walked away from the accident -- but was so high on whatever, I doubt she realizes the cost to her (well, probably her insurance company).....the town needs a new street sign, the power company needs three new meters and power lines, Saucy needs clean up and inventory, and the building is definately  the worse for wear and will need structural repair, and of coarse her husband's car which is totaled.  And I heard that the guy she tried to run off the road and pass on a sharp curve, through an intersection was pretty upset.  Actually, everyone was amused at my hysterical giggling.....which is the only emotion I could show.

if she only had waited a day, she could have blamed it on the snow.  This was just bad judgement on her part.

but as you say, this will pass.

the store sure smells tasty though.:P

I did forget one funny part -- the fire dept and police seemed to me to be over concerned that I wouldn't get power back for a few days.....and I said, trying to exude a calmness that I was definately not feeling, that it didn't matter -- I could work without power.  Well, apparently you need power to run your furnance, and since we due for not one, not two, but three storms in the next three days, they were concerned about my pipes freezing and more hot sauce freezing and bursting.  If you only couldn't have seen the look on their faces.  seems I asked a girlie from the Caribbean question.:?  the beauty of Maine, like Culebra, is it's a small place where everyone chips in and helps.....and an electrician happened to drive by and stopped and hooked me back up to the power with no charge.....and a smile and a giggle......so no frozen hot sauce tonight.

the newspaper just sent me this picture of the car .  in the light of a new day, I've decided that having skid marks from a car going up your building into your electrical meter is not a good thing.

and yes Doug, I believe the floors need to be professionally done.  Luckily, she did have insurance.

Admin, sorry for your loss and hassels involved with this.
Your bottom line quote really applies to this situation well.
Just know we are thinking of you while you muddle through.

Did the driver just want a re-design of her front end?????   Rather marvelous photo...

Doug -- I can now report with confidence that habanero does strip floor varnish.  I can also tell you that it strips skin off hands.  Really today's cleanup effort was for a hazmat team.  I'm not confident my hands will ever have that smooth silky feel again.  and don't ask me to take out my contact lenses of my eyes yet -- I haven't quite figured that one out yet.

And if I (or anyone who saw the aftermath) could figure out what was (or was not) going through this woman's mind, I'd have the answers to all of life's questions.....

my store has become an overnight sensation.  I did get a kick out of people driving by and their facial expressions as they saw the skid marks going up the side of the building.

I heard from an eyewitness today that after crash, the woman sat on the side of the road for a few minutes (laughing the entire time which is an entirely different story).  She then got up and announced she needed to move her car.  I have heard that the look on the police chief's face was priceless.

I was told today that the attempts at proper prononucion of Saucy Contessa (I'll let you mull the possibilities over on your own) as the location of the accident over the emergency scanner were also priceless, and I might not ever live that one down.
