I was browsing through the list of "members" and note that many are garbage listings, including some adverts (for Acrobat) and some are porn names. How do these get on the list and does this mean that they might be notified every time something is posted?

| Don't click on the homepage of any of them you don't know. I tried it once and got about 15 porno web pages. I had to cold reboot to stop them, even though I have pop-up protection, and my anti-virus detected a robot trying to install something on my laptop. Very scary experience.

Doug,
Thanks for the warning. I just don't understand how they get on the member list when it is a controlled list. I supposed it is impossible to keep hackers, etc. out of any list or group.

I used to scour the board and email admin when
I found one, the problem is these spammers can grab
the emails of those members who list their email!
Someone neeeds to keep up with this or designate an
attenuator.

i do keep up with this -- there are times when they spammers get heavy and others not so.......they do not have access to readers email. All blogs and forums have this issue.

I do have to say that apparently you all do have too much time on your hands if you're looking at other user's emails....send some time this way!

Jim, as a "Forum Expert", you can see this information. If it distresses you so much, I'm happy to bump you back down to the User category where you won't be able to see other members private information.
your choice.

I'm sorry I'm confused, I thought someone
started this thread by pointing out that
there were many names on the members list
who were not legitimate and someone else
expressed concern,
I simply pointed out the irony that at the same
time there were new spammers.
I think my message was, that in the past
I notified admin by e mail (that means privately)
when I saw something problematic. i think
your argument is with someone else.
I think you have taken care of the problem
by blocking access to the members list.
Which I never looked at anyways.

folks -- truly -- this is an ongoing issue with spammers. I can, however, assure you that your information is safe on the forum.
Because of your complaints, I have taken further steps to protect everyone on the forum, and that includes preventing everyone, including members known as Forum Experts, from snooping into other members private information.
there should be no reason for any of you to be doing so...

I also want to reassure members that this Forum
member never has nor is interested in Forum
members emails and any reference to Forum
Experts or members "snooping" is a gross
overstatement of what was posted by members
on this thread in good faith.
Forum members do not snoop when they go to
Forum members profiles to get more data, in
fact that's why Forum members "choose to provide this
info; also a forum member has the option to not show
his e-mail. I don't think admin intended to insult
anyone....the problem and complaint was SPAMMERS.

Gosh, I didn't realize that we had a "Whining Corner" forum. This is the perfect location for my posting. I really was just curious to see how many people there are and how many people post, etc. Now, if I really had a whine it would be that the spell checker doesn't recognize "Culebra" as properly spelling.

It apparently doesn't check syntax or verb
tense either. God now you got me whining
too Abe. What the hell, if we're gonna
break the rules, lets breaking them all.

Sorry I posted this here, I tried to edit
but apparently I can't edit my posts
anymore because I suggested that if
you have a complaint you should
e mail admin privately. Apparently
that is wrong.
I also want to apologize for saying "I don't
think admin intended to insult anyone....the
problem and complaint was SPAMMERS."
I guess that was wrong too. Apparently we
WERE a problem (even though some of us
were complaining about NON-MEMBERS)
I did want to say thank you to admin
for eliminating the ability to see each
others profiles and protecting our
e mail privacy from prying eyes even
if she had to include us.
That seemed to make some sense to me,
(although I am on a double dose of Darvocet
with an insane toothache and just called my
dog by my cat's name..they both ignored
me)
