After our stay in Culebra we'll be overnighting in San Juan on our way home. Can anyone recommend an inexpensive hotel for a family of four?
Does anyone have any experience with Hotel El Consulado (not El Convento) in Condado?
TIA

Larry,
I have made reservations for my parents and my in-laws at http://www.trespalmasinn.com/index.html in Condado in March. 'Course I can't comment on it because they haven't stayed there yet.
Other places that were recommended for their stay (by friends that live on Culebra) were:
http://www.atwindchimesinn.com/
and
http://www.canariohotels.com/inn.htm
Hope this helps!

Larry,
My husband and I are staying at Tres Palmas Inn (http://www.trespalmasinn.com) for the first time en route to Culebra (first time) and on the way back from Culebra due to flight times into and out of SJ. I had originally booked at Canario by the Lagoon but was not sure I was happy with the choice. Someone from this net (the lady who owns one of the guest houses in Culebra) recommended Tres Palmas- I called and the man was very nice. The place looks fine from the website and it says they have some larger rooms such as 2 bedroom suites. I would be glad to let you know after Feb. 25 how it was if it is not too late then.
At Wind Chimes Inn told me that they have a 3 night minimum this time of year.
Let me know if you want a report later! Good luck.

One more thing, Larry, Tres Palmas is technically in an area called Ocean Park- not Condado- although it seems to be adjacent to it from maps I have looked at. My understanding is that it is 10-15 minutes from SJU and Isla Grande Airports and 10 minutes or so from Old San Juan. Someone also said the Best Western at the SJU airport was nice but it was $178 and I would rather drink my coffee looking at the beach or that pool in the Tres Palmas photos than at the airport hotel- regardless of how nice it is. If you really want to walk around the Condado area for restaurants or beaches then you might not want to be at Tres Palmas- we will be taking a taxi in late at night then taking a taxi to Old San Juan to explore a half a day or so before heading to the airport for a late afternoon flight to Culebra.
I had also considered Casa del Caribe in Condado- owned by the same people as At Wind Chimes but cheaper- only know what I read in travel books and on the website. I did check Fodor's, Lonely Planet, Hunter Travel Guide and Let's Go for information (positive) on these places.

I've stayed at Canario, and was pleased. The San Juan area is a big metro area -- Old San Juan is the touristy area with the old forts and buildings and shopping, Condado and Ocean Park are considered the 'upscale" neighborhoods (Condado is home of the casinos).
I've heard great things about Tres Palmas, but never actually stayed there myself.

Just wanted to follow up with this, and say that my parents were pleased with Tres Palmas. It was quite an adequate place for one night's stay. The toured San Juan by bus and taxi from the hotel before meeting us at Isla Grande to fly to Culebra.
At the back end of their trip, they took the 6:30 am ferry from Culebra to Fajardo, rented a car from L&M, went to the rainforest, and then stayed at The Ceiba Country Inn for one night. http://www.geocities.com/countryinn00735/ They loved this place, and would have stayed longer had this not been their last night in PR.

| Ceiba Country Inn is heaven -- as long as you like coqui's -- they fill the rainforest with their wonderful song.......a great casual spot at the base of the rainforest....

My mom mentioned the coqui noise, but she said it was better than hearing all the damn roosters on Culebra!
