Since I was staying with friends over New Years week and they were arriving a day after I did, I needed a place for just one night. I had followed the story of Mark and Terrie Hayward's move from Tortola to Culebra with interest on the internet, and wanted to check out this affordable lodging alternative.
When I called them last summer to inquire, I told them that I knew a one-day stay could be a pain during the holidays, but they worked with me on it and it evidently dovetailed into their bookings OK. I stayed in an "overflow" area - not typically rented, upstairs in the owner's quarters area.
The place is immaculately kept and beautifully furnished, and my bed was quite comfortable. My room caught the breezes nicely, which made for a restful night. The morning of my departure, I was able to check out the common areas, and it was clear that quality fixtures and furnishings were universally used.
Mark and Terrie are great people to shoot the breeze with, and were very helpful when my stuff needed storing before arrival and after check-out. I also liked the fact that Palmetto is only a short walk to my favorite breakfast hangout, El Patio panaderia.
One thing did puzzle me...returning from Zoni, I noticed a couple of signs advertising Palmetto, and couldn't help but wonder how effective they could be. Visitors looking for lodging would have to be arriving at the ferrydock or airport. The only folks who would see the signs would be those already housed someplace, or Zoni residents. Plus, I know the Haywards have worked hard to incorporate green ideas into everything about Palmetto, so the signs seemed incongruous.
Terrie and Mark's new business gives us visitors another fine option for staying in culebra and I'd definitely stay there again.

Thanks for the great review, and hopefully we'll hear more about Palmetto and their new Culebra venture.
I wonder about the signs as well, and not just Palmetto's -- the most offensive are the buyinCulebra bumper stickers. But any signs, tastefully done or not, distract from the beauty of Culebra. Hopefully the Culebra-style billboards will disappear.....and we can go back to the days of lack of advertising....
