What is the cost of a case of beer on the island...as well as ball park figure for a decent bottle of wine and a bottle of vodka. Trying to decide if i should bring my vodka and wine to the island. Also, best place two purchase. Thanks

about $30 for a case of beer.
wine - $10 and up.
Liquor - don't really know, but I'd guess it's about 20% more than in the States.
You can get all at Lilly's at the Ferry Dock and El Eden. Milka sells beer now - don't know about wine. Other groceries on the island sell beer and perhaps wine as well.
Although it costs a little more to buy on-island, think about the economy and the needs of the local - buy locally!

Milka sells beer, wine and liquor now. I think a fifth of Finlandia was around $16-$18. His prices are pretty good and the selection is decent. We got a couple tasty bottles of wine at El Eden for around $15-$18/bottle.
Hope that helps! I second what Debbie said, buy local if you possibly can.

and I would definately third the opinion that it may cost a little more than the states, but the hassle of transporting bottles down, and the risk that they would break in luggage (San Juan baggage handlers are not known for their gentle handling of bags) would far outweigh the many benefits of buying locally. Years ago, I would have told you that the selection was very limited, but especially wines are plently available and some really good ones that I hadn't even seen in the states at El Eden.
Hope this helps.
Enjoy your trip!

Bring your vodka from Pa? Is this a joke or are
you on an incredibly tight budget. And the beer,
how many cases? I'm probably missing something
like may be being able to drink while you travel. Do
they allow you to bring your own "beverage" on
planes now. But even if you couldn't I guess you
could sneak a few between flights, unless your
baggage is automatically being transferred.
Oh my, I'm afraid I can't help. Wait, a friend says
there are bars at most major airports now, but
that's way too expensive. But there is a way you
can legally get a buzz on a plane...NYQUIL So you
could sit and drink with your baggage to the last
minute, then switch to Nyquil to get you through
the flight. I used to drink, don't be offended.
If you decide to bring your own, once you get to
Culebra, you can eat at BarbaraRosa's, where you
can bring your own, wait I'm sorry, Barbara Says
there is an Off-Island Booze corking fee 20.00 per
bottle, that's a little steep, but the fee for beer is
only $1.00 per can OR bottle! I'm sorry I don't
seem to be helping much, but Culebra has really
beautiful beaches (where you are not allowed to
bring bottles)

Thanks for the reply. Absolutely ... will contribute to the economy with wine and beer for sure..only thought about the vodka because I drink Absolute Citron and not everywhere has it.

I wasn't asking about cost because I want to bring my beer wine or Vodka, I was asking so I have a ball park figure of what things cost (we are bringing friends and a budget is something they need to follow..this trip is a first vacation for them that they saved to enjoy..not everyone has an unlimited budget). I plan to purchase beer and wine there and vodka if they carry absolute. No I am not bringing it on the plane to get a buzz (how rude) so I won't be needing Nyquil either and yes you are able to bring liquor if you pack it in your checked luggage. I have always liked this board and this is the first time I have even read a rude reply. Yes, I do think you are missing something!

Don't take Judge Judy too personally -- she does have a way with words, and she directs them at pretty much everyone the same way.
As the webmistress of the site, I fully understood your question -- and it's one asked often. And back in the very old days, when I went down to Culebra I was known to pack some "necessary" items myself (and actually to share with old Judge Judy). But Culebra has changed in recent years, and much more is available on island, and at basically the same cost you get it in the States or the Big Island.
I'm not a vodka girl myself, so I can't answer you specifically, but I'm sure that a few fellow vodka lovers lurk around these points and will be able to answer your Absolute Citron question. I can vouch for wine -- plenty of very affordable choices as well as some higher end for special occassions, and beer....well.......cerveza is found everywhere.
I also wanted to assure you that I will have a little chat with Judge Judy (she doesn't scare me), and ask her to be more gentle with newbies to the Culebra community both on island and here in cyber-land. Maybe she's run out of her Nyquil supply or forgot to take her meds today.
Again, don't let one old disgruntled retired Judge prevent you from asking questions here -- we are here to answer, and if we don't know, we'll let you know!

From one vodka lover to another, I can tell you that there is absolutely Absolut on the island!! However, I don't know that you will be able to find Citron, but I have honestly never looked. My husband and I are both vodka drinkers and our first time on the island always sought out the Absolut. Well, a couple places only had Finlandia, so we would have that instead. Needless to say, we have found ourselves switching over to Finlandia!! It really is quite good. My husband does "on the rocks", and is much pickier about the vodka since he isn't mixing it with anything like I am. Maybe take a little bottle of Citron down with you and try some others while you are there. Then, if you don't like them you will still have your Citron as a back-up. And if there is any left over, I'm sure you will find someone more than willing to "hold" onto it for you so you don't have to go through the hassle of packing it back up to take home!!!

I want to say I'm so sorry for being rude, I thought
I was having a little fun with a heavy drinker. I
quess I was wrong, it does seem so much clearer
to me now since I received my personal letter
from admin. I haven't had a drink in almost two years
and sometimes I forget how social drinkers (that would
be light casual pleasant happy drinkers) are sensitive
to jokes about drinking almost but not quite as bad as
heavy hitters, like I was. I was trying to be funny but
now I'm depressed/
I am now a shut in and the only fun I have is when
they roll me over to change my sheets, it gets real
confusing as to who's grabbing who. They won't give me
booze or sharp pencils, so maybe you could forgive me
and sneak me a bottle when you get here! We could be
friends, do you know how to massage old people?

oh boy.
I can't decide if this might makes things worse or better. But thanks Judge for attempting to make amends. And please, do us all a favor and remain a shut-in.

Yeah, like you have a sense of humor, JJ...suuuurrreeee. I promise you when I see you out with your walker I will definitely give you a rollover with a sharp pencil. Try to stay out of the broken glass; that stuff has ants on it and you know how blistered your mouth got the last time...I really was crying from empathy, not hysterical laughter. You know I care.

Tricia,
Call El Eden before you go to see if they carry it. If they don't, Luz will surely order some. My internet connection is spazzo tonight; otherwise I would look up the number for you too!
and don't let the ol' grouches on here get to you. . .

I resent being called grouchy!
I am old, slow to rise
my verdicts, still wise
I am edgy, but funny
with my sting , you get honey
I like memories, jokes
and forget-me-nots
but I laugh so hard, I fart a lot
instead of the bench,
my opinions and sense
A throne, a groan
And incontinence
The dignity of my office
Now lost in the end
Instead of robes
I now wear depends
Why are you pickin' on a sweet (although a little gaseous)
little old lady like me. I need to get out, it's getting a little ripe
in here.
