I really liked The Memory Keeper's Daughter, but some people I know hated it...which of course, shows it had something going for it to affect that way!

Disposable income for books? They all come to us eventually  don't they?

Right now there is a British woman here on a boat for awhile with her husband; we share books and critique them afterward, at the cart. It's interesting to get her perspective (and listen to her extremely literate without being snobby vocabulary in that wonderful accent!), and luckily, we like to read the same sort of books, serious and junk, so the international book fair continues! "Oh, sorry, you wanted to buy something? Hold on a minute...oh! you read that too??"

LOL, I know exactly what you mean about trying to finish a library book at home before it has to be returned!  The last time I had to return one 1/2 finished--it killed me!  I don't know about your library, but at ours you can request a 4 or 6 week checkout on some books.  It really helps!!

In Orlando, they have the occasional Amnesty Days at the library. My daughter keeps thinking her picture will appear at the PO for her rather ridiculous amount of overdue library books, so I encourage her to wait for Amnesty Days...don't be afraid!! Take them BACK! Or just toss them at the front door and run like hell.

MJ,

No, I haven't read any of them. Haven't been reading much at all, actually, other than 10-12 pages a night of whatever I've got at the moment. The netflix thing is great! You can get movies you haven't even heard of for the longest time.

Here are a few favorites of mine: DEAD MAN...THE MILAGRO BEANFIELD WAR...CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON...L.A. STORY...2 DAYS IN THE VALLEY...DR. STRANGELOVE...

I've seen a lot of movies in my time. The first was "The Robe"
a biblical thriller. A guy was supposed to prove he was god
or god like and he would climb this tower which resembled the
washington monument in height. He made a contraption
with a little doll on a steel rod and it flew around/circled the
tower. The people on the ground were amazed that he really
could fly, but then someone spotted the steel rod (from the ground
the "being" looked like 3-4 inches) the crowd got upset seiged
the tower and stoned him to death. I was 6 years old, totally
freaked out but never forgot it. The best, and I mean the best,
I have ever seen was "The Emerald Forest" synopsis: White man
goes to the Amazon to build a dam which will encroach on tribal
indians. One particular tribe paints there faces with emerald dust
to camouflage their faces in the green forest. Tribal magic, the
kidnapping of a child (to save him from the "termite" people).
It is incredible. Did you see Mosquito Coast? This blows it away!
The indians are half naked and good looking too! You will
fall in love with Kachiri and the tribal chief. It's the kind of movie
you don't want to end. I saw the first Harry Potter, fabulous, I
only wished I could have seen it as a little boy. The gnome bankers
alone were worth the price of admission. It ranks up there with
"A Christmas Story" and "Wizard of OZ" as far as escape. Actually
it outranks them.

Jim,

Sounds like THE ROBE was a shocker for you (haven't seen it). One shocker for me as an adult was BOYS DON'T CRY (that's the title, IIRC). The evil/badness/F'd-upness, whatever you want to call it, of us is presented in such a real and raw way that it blew me away. Absolutely terrible.

Edited to add: I got a similar feeling after seeing this movie as when reading the part where the horse is beaten to death in CRIME & PUNISHMENT. I've never been able to pick it up again. :(
