We're planning on staying for 2-3 months next winter and want to bring our dog along as we couldn't possibly think of leaving her for that long, and wanted to see if anyone knew of what the deal is with getting her on island. I'm guessing flying her on cargo to san juan from new york and then taking her on the ferry? I'm assuming we can't take her on the plane from san juan to culebra??

It's easy bring dogs down......depending on his/her size, she can be in the plane with you, or in the cargo area.  And you can fly from San Juan to Culebra.....as long as it's not a huge dog.  But personally, I've always felt the cargo ferry method was more dog friendly!!

On one of our first trips OUT of Culebra, we stopped on Vieques (by plane) to collect a man and his huge sheep-herder like dog. The airline employees had to dismantle the carrier, take the dog out, put the bottom part of the carrier in the back of the plane, place the dog in the carrier, and re-assemble the carrier around the dog. To say the airline was dog-friendly would be an understatement. That was Isla Nena. We have taken our cat on Air Flamenco three times now. Because her carrier is small, I get to take her on my lap, although a certain fairly un-friendly pilot in January tried to make me throw her on top of the luggage in the back. He lost - both ways. On the way out, he argued with me to the point of having to ask any other passengers if they were allergic to cats. Um - if you're allergic to cats, you're going to be allergic no matter whether she's on my lap or in the "cargo" area. There is no separation. . . rant off! Take the dog - you know she'll be much happier with you.
