I know that people have said on forums that there is an ATM machine somewhere on the island. Under services on this website it says "Bank" but there is no information. Is there a bank? Where is it located? Hours or days of operation? I am trying to decide whether or not I could cash traveller's checks anywhere if I had them. I appreciate any advice anyone could give me.

Since this site is clearly still under construction, all the info isn't up, and we apologize for that.
There is a bank on the island, Banco Popular, located up by the plaza and ferry dock. There is an ATM there, and you can cash travelers checks -- they are open Monday - Friday, and closed both US and Puerto Rican holidays.
Sometimes, some of the grocery stores will be willing to cash travelers checks for you if they have enough cash on hand.
There is also an ATM machine at Excetera -- located by Superyette Mayra, which also has Western Union services.
Most businesses accept credit cards, although a few of the restruants do not. Best to find out ahead of time....
Hope this helps!!
You must be getting very excited as your trip nears!

Thanks so much. I realize the site is under construction and have enjoyed watching its progress just since I have been reading it in the last couple of months- you have really moved!!! I did not mean to sound rude about the missing data- I don't think I worded my question very well. Your site is GREAT and has been such a help!
I appreciate the bank and ATM information. We are getting very excited- we both are in desperate need of a vacation and can't wait to see Culebra.
One more thing- is Mayra open on Sundays and do you know what time it closes? I have seen days and times on the site for Milka, El Eden and Genesis but someone had recommended Mayra for supplies as well.
Thanks again for all the help and advice!

No problem.....this is known as the friendly, "if we don't know the answer, it don't exist" site.....hopefully by this week, all the info will be up, the maps working, and we look forward to ideas on how to improve the site from visitors such as you!!
I think Mayra might be open Sunday mornings, but that may not be accurate -- I know Milka (Sun morning only), Isla de Sol and Genesis are. Some businesses close for siesta around the lunch time hours....

| OOOOPS -- I've been told that Mayra IS open Sunday mornings. Does anyone know for sure?? This would be a cosmic change, if true.

Wow. I have no idea if it is open Sunday mornings....I sorta hope it isn't to tell you the truth. But I'll find out today if I can and report back.
I remember in Florida when Publix started opening on Sunday. I do believe that is when the world truly started changing...and not for the better. Business - 1, Family Time - 0.

I agree; however, we are arriving on the 4:30 flight on Sunday which will put us in Culebra around 5, I think. We still need to fill out car rental papers and check in where we are staying but I would like to be able to buy some water, coffee, and snacks for the room. Where does anyone suggest IF there is a market open until 6 or 7?
Thanks.

on a Sunday, you'll be lucky if you find anything open that late....if you're taking the ferry, it'd be easy to stop at a grocery store in Fajardo to get the stuff you need until Monday -- you pass several of them on the way from San Juan.
the gossip I heard was Mayra's had changed to be being open on Sunday mornings to compete with Milka's -- grocery store wars -- even on Culebra!

Genesis, in the La Romana area, has very long hours and are open on Sundays -- I just don't know until what time, though it's not quite as late as other days.
Why doesn't Ann ask her rental agent to get just one or two things?? And she can PACK coffee -- that's all she'll really need if she goes out for dinner. She can go out for breakfast Monday too.

By the time I closed the cart today (plus, before I opened) Superette Mayra was closed, so I didn't find out. Genesis is supposedly open until 6 on Sunday, but not always. I think Bayberry's suggestion is a good one though. Seems a reasonable request on for a Sunday eve check in!

That is good advice and if I were renting a house I would ask but we are staying at Villa Boheme. We will eat out the entire time we are there but I got a unit with a kitchenette because I really like to drink that first cup of coffee with a view before I move to the shower and out to breakfast- on vacation and on island time, you know? Also, since I have read about bakeries with good bread and pastries, I might even get "pre-breakfast treats"- so decadent to get to leave the diet behind and eat on vacation. I usually pack some coffee and filters but am still a little worried about the 25 pound baggage limit on Air Flamenco when we both probably have 30-35 pound bags with snorkel gear. I will just stick a little coffee in and we will go to the store the next day. BY the way, I am thinking I want to buy jugs or bottles of water but maybe I am wrong? Is the water potable? We both drink LOTS of water so I usually keep plenty in the refrigerator. The store question was really for drinks, snacks and water and I can certainly take care of that on Monday unless the stores observe President's Day. Any ideas about that????
Thanks to all you helpful people!!

Maxwell House makes coffee like teabags -- perfect for traveling....all you need is the hot water, and .if you need milk, just pack enough Cremora (I know, yuck, but works in a pinch) for what I need.
Water is very drinkable on Culebra -- but bottled water is available in all the stores. And whereever you go for dinner Sunday night will be happy to sell you some bottles of water.
There are three spots to go in the morning as well for breakfast -- Mamacita's (just over the bridge and to the left) and Dinghy Dock (right next door to Villa Boheme) both open 8ish, and Pandeli opens at 7ish (someone please correct me on this). Pandeli has great bakery goods as well, and is located across the bridge, to the left, past Mamacitas about a 1/2 block.
I doubt President's Day will affect all the stores, but do plan on going there in the morning, as they may make a half day of it. Open Some Days, Closed Others is a theme in Culebra!
Also, the owners of Villa Boheme are sweethearts, and if you called them, they might be able to help you out....you're in good hands!

Don't forget El Patio panaderia next to the airport for breakfast. I learned more Spanish there than in school. Awesome Cuban sandwiches, too.
