Yesterday morning we were received with these two flyers all around town about "cemento" on the island. They were posted around the night before by I don't really know who. A lot of the information is misinformed and I know that for a fact. People that "need" to say something should do it in the open with information that is valid. We don't need this kind of publicity at all. We are always complaining of not having open hearings and then we "get" this kind of misinformation.
Let us talk and dialogue openly with the right information for the good of all of us. The least we need is this kind of stuff.
I am willing to talk and hope to reach an agreement to what is best for all of us and not anly a few that don't show their faces.
Drop me a note!!!!!

I'm interested in reading here what the misinformation is about, pawsnest! I know you have an inside track and I think it would be very useful (because of the very public nature of this flyer) to post the misinformation here. I thought you'd LOVE this flyer!!! I thought, cool, it's scanned and online! So I'm sort of shocked and want to know what you know if there is something else going on. And, as far as I can tell, it's no secret who put these out, you can ask anyone around (like me!) and they'll tell you. It wasn't a conspiracy move or illegal as far as I can tell, if all that was posted was/is public information.
And frankly, I don't think it's bad publicity. The comments I've heard about it from tourists are along the lines of "They [developers] are trying to do this where we live as well, that's wonderful that you all are fighting against it!" I have heard no negative comments at all. The rest of the comments were how "I was here 10/20 years ago and it has changed a lot...I hope it doesn't turn into St. Thomas."
So I see that as all positive. The tourists we have here right now are the sort who take a chance on their holiday being ruined by a storm because they want to be on Culebra in low season and most quiet, despite dining and shopping options being more limited. In other words, the kind who love Culebra for exactly what Culebra is. A good thing!

I don't have it scanned. Let's see what shakes down and then we'll know where to go with that information. Truth is good! Sometimes unpleasant, but ultimately good.
Basically what it was was a list of building projects on Culebra, with names (builders? contractors?owners? developers?) connected with each one and the number of units each would have, with the phrase Isla de Cemento at the top.

Indeed, the strong character of Culebra's people, who have resisted selling off their heritage, is a powerful influence in people like myself returning, again and again.
Developers always insist that more is better. They take their profits and leave residents to deal with the congestion, strain on infrastructure, and damage to the environment. Culebra's people are wise to protect the things about their home which keep it apart from places like Cancun.

The flyer appeared yesterday morning on Barbara's
outside wall. I think what triggered it was a
contentious meeting with a Dr. Borrero who
is planning on a 6 unit Condo opposite the
Coral Condo which wil dominate and be a
de facto taking of the muelle Coral (across
from Dinghy Dock) In addition there is another
4 story Condo called Navegante planned for
on the other side of the Coral Condo, In other
words there will be three relatively large
Condos dominating these neighborhoods
and the Muelle Coral (some call iit the City Dock).
I scanned the flyer for here I am not part of its
distribution, like Carmen said some of the info
is not accurate, but I understand the gist of it.Attachment: Isla del Cemento.jpg (Downloaded 91 times)

Geez Louise is this hot or what I got three phone calls
I put up the wrong flyer. That's Cause there are Two Sides.
This is the other one. I am not responsible for its
distribution but I am reporting on it. I do agree
with the intent.Attachment: Cemento list.jpg (Downloaded 91 times)

Wasn't the name on # 9 the same person who tried to block access to Flamenco. Wasn't his "bird observation tower" taken down by the town?

Yes Abe, the inimitable Victor Gonzalez, who is now
apparently convincing the Municipal/ACDEC that the
Muellecito FlaBch (Shark Pens) needs bathrooms, picnic
tables and a 5 o'clock gate.

thanks for posting both sides Jim, and sharing this with forum readers.....
I for one agree with Island Woman -- while I'm of coarse disgusted by further attempts to concrete the entire island, flyers like this will stimulate conversation between residents and visitors, and if a positive movement comes out of it to band tighter together and do whatever is necessary to protect Culebra, then that is all good with me...

Here's a new one that appeared today at
Galasso's Culebra Island Realty. while he has
no problem with the intent of the poster he
is asking that you do not stick it on painted walls.
A rough translation (paws nest help me)
"WHAT IS PROPOSED IS AT LEAST TEN YEARS
MORE OF CONSTRUCTION!
How do we get more jobs when these projects
are built with contractors, workers and machines
from outside?
¿Can we stand 10 years of large contractors on
the island inspecting their projects with helicopters
while invading your privacy as did the Navy?
Do you think El Yunque can provide the millions of
gallons of water needed for the construction of mega
projects that are proposed for Vieques and Culebra?
What are we going to do with the tons of garbage
accumulated because of these constructions?
Do you think tourists will enjoy a construction zone
and an island of cement?
What will happen to our beaches after 10 years of
dirty mud buildings invading our waters?
What do you do when you are evicted from your island?Attachment: cemento Construcción.jpg (Downloaded 31 times)

And this one:
Currently in Culebra there are approximately
1,000 rooms under construction or proposed
for construction
. . . Double what we have!
Each room will have at least 2 people, which
will add more than 2,000 people to the island
of Culebra. When the island is filled to capacity,
how will the boats, beaches, roads, airplanes,
be able to serve the people?
The type of tourists who usually visit Culebra
look for nature, peace and tranquility: they
won’t when Culebra is full of people that want
to party, get drunk and rabble rouse?
When these new hotels hire employees from
outside, where will they live?
Should Culebra become another St. Thomas?
And Culebra be filled with more bars and
"party animals" Won’t this bring more fights,
more robberies, more drugs, and more
disrespect to the people of Culebra?
More Importantly, WILL “THIS” BENEFIT OF OUR YOUTH?Attachment: Cemento Boracho.jpg (Downloaded 30 times)
