For nearly 2 years now, my husband and I have been researching for a place to retire. We have lived in alaska now for thirty years and are ready for a warmer climate. My husband was stationed on Vieques in the early 70's as a marine and has Always wanted to go back. Our dream is to relocate to either Culebra, (our first choice), or Vieques. Could anyone tell me if we could possibly survive on 2000 a month if we bought a place outright? We have read pretty much evertthing on the internet (filling two boxes of papers!) about your two islands there and would love to become part of your community. Any information would be GREATLY appreciated!
Thanks in advance for your time.

Cool post, Kathy.
I gotta ask...was your husband involved with a joint exercise with the British Marine Corps in the fall of 1971? I've been wracking my brain to remember the exact dates and what it was called - anyway I participated. I'll let the others give informed answers as to your cost of living inquiry. Good luck!
Doug

The beauty of Culebra is it's simplicity (at the same complicated )......and if you have housing, which will be your big hurdle, as rentals are hard to come by, $2000 should allow you to live fairly comfortably, but not extravegently on Culebra....good luck in your new chapter in life!!

Thank you your posts! My husband was on Vieques in 73' for several months and for all the years we've been together has talked about going back.
NO, I've never been to Culebra, but I have enjoyed reading everything about your beautiful island and love to look at the beautiful pictures, (especially on a cold, dark winter day here with 20 below!). We've read the prerequisite "Don't stop the Carnival" which we enjoyed, but doesn't deter us. We also ordered and read John O' Toole's book "Caribbean Home Ownership", so we could make an informed decision.
Alaska is Very beautiful as well, and we've enjoyed living here. Moose in the yard, eagles overhead, beautiful snow covered mountains, catching king salmon and halibut, but we're ready for a change. We've never had a honeymoon, 28 years this saturday, never went on vacation, so we're hoping to spend the rest of our lives enjoying a permanent vacation in your part of God's creation. I'm sure you all feel so blessed to live there!
Thank you again for your posts....

I would suggest a trip/visit to Culebra first before moving.....Culebra is a very unique place, and only a handful of people really choose to live there, let alone year round. It is quite different from Vieques -- smaller (and we think much prettier).
That being said those of us who choose to make Culebra our homes do so for good reasons!!! It's a one-of-a-kind community and spot....

Yes, we will DEFINITELY come for a visit before we make up our minds, but at this point we are very seriously thinking this is what we want. We're aware that it will be totally different than what we're used to.
Another question I have is what you are able to grow there as I'm a garden fanatic. I've been looking for tropical gardening books but have not come across anything yet. I understand the water issue as well. We have a septic and five kid's so we're water conservators here as well. We are somewhat concerned about the contamination on Vieques and how that affects the water and anything grown there. I was really interested in the new hydroponic greenhouse that they've started and would LOVE to be involved with that!
Anyway, thanks for the information....we will see your beautiful peice of paradise, and God willing...might be neighbors!
thanks again
Kathy
