I have a Verizon phone, which works better here in some places than it does in Maine......

there are some dead zones on the island (like Zoni beach), but if you're justing using it for emergencies or occassional use, you'll have no problem -- it's my only phone here on the island as a matter of fact...

Well, since you asked, does Alltel work on the island?  And how about EVDO?  I hate to ask, but it sure would be nice to have internet access while we're there.    Otherwise, I can always use Coqui for the month.

Can't wait for the 2nd of February and hope some of our "old" friends will be there as well.

I'm going to miss you by 2 days.:(:(:(

I don't know about either of those providers......I am going to look into a Verizon wireless card.  I need to have more stable connection than I currently have here.  If anyone has any experience with them, I'd love to hear your opinions!!!

It rained, but not enought to get the island nice and green and maintain it for 3 weeks.....it was joined by heavy winds, and alot of the mositure just evaporated into the air......but it's better than nothing.  Since I'm hoping for a beach day or two or some snorkeling, those days will be rainy.:D

also curious does the sprint network work on Culebra?  I have a virginmobile cell and it works off sprint.  Checked with virgin mobile they said my plan is good in Puerto Rico but that doesn't mean service is good. Thanks

Sprint works great in town and in Barriada Clark.  The further toward Zoni, the poorer the signal.  Haven't tried it out toward Soldado or on Flamenco/Carlos Rosario.

In case anyone wants to know, Alltel cell phones work fine on the island.  Also, my air card works for internet access.  An added bonus while we're here!  I usually sign up for a month with coqui.net, but won't have to this year.  It just makes it easier to keep in touch with all those kids.

I don't know, somehow instant Internet access while on Culebra seems oxymoronic (or ironic or a paradox or something like that).  I like that fact that I don't have regular Internet access while on the island.  We can drop in to PanDeli every 3-4 days, have an espresso and check our e-mail.  That, to me, epitomizes Culebra.  I have discovered that the world goes on without my responding to my e-mail immediately every day.  Of course that probably says something about my lack of importance to the rest of the world.  (BTW I just ran spell check and it doesn't like the word "Culebra".  Can we add it to the dictionary?)

It's great to have the luxury of being out of touch for an extended period of time; and, believe me, when we first came here 18 years ago for several months, we were OUT-OF-TOUCH!

BUT, if you want to see a photo of your four year old grandson skiing at Steamboat Springs, or if you want to even read this forum, the internet is a wonderful luxury to have while you're here.

I love to see the photos posted, whether I'm here or at home.  It just keeps me in constant touch with the island and the wonderful people who so generously share their time and energy making us feel a part of it.

LOL....I remember the days when if you needed to reach someone on the island for an emergency, you called the police station and they would go to that person's house or Hotel PR or Villa Boheme (the two "hotels" back then) to leave a message.....

but glad to hear you can't live without a daily forum dose!!!!:D
