As much as I wanted to go open the cart this morning, and you know I did, when I saw the sky shortly after dawn, I thought I might wait awhile. We need the rain, so all you who were doing rain dances yesterday, well done!!!

I love the lighting in that picture.......almost looks like Boothbay Harbor in the summer (the ice flows this time of the year would change the compostion).

That too. Nothing like hammering on ice to get out those pesky feelings of frustration.

Hey, at least two chances of balmy 40 something degrees in your future! C'mon, do a little dance for Spring is Coming joy! 92% of scientists agree that the emotion joy is better for keeping and encouraging warmth, and indeed, in unison with tea drinking, talking to your pets as if they care and soup cooking, has been known to hasten Spring 4 years out of 7, with Leap Year showing a slightly more favorable chance than Non Leap Years.

LOL......the amount I'm talking to the pets these days would not be characterized as healthy.....and the birds talk back.....scary times.

yup -- we're in for a HUGE mess this week -- flooding is going to be a huge issue, and then re-freezing.  Two large schools are closed today -- not because of the impending storm, but because their roofs have collapsed under the snow and ice.

i'm tired of split pea -- it's corn chowder today.

You'll never run out of soups!!! There are so many good ones and now is the time to go with the old standby's. Navy beans and ham hocks (tons of garlic and onions - simple, delicious), well, here is a site to while away some time before your roof collapses (you can dump the soup and put the pan on your head):

Or this one...

She-Crab Soup Recipe courtesy of Emeril Lagasse Show:  The Essence of Emeril Episode:  Soups
4 tablespoons butter
4 tablespoons flour
2 small onions, grated
6 ribs of celery, grated
1 tablespoon minced garlic
Salt and pepper
1 teaspoon mace
1 quart whole milk
1 cup cream
1 tablespoon Crystal hot sauce
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
2 pounds crab meat, picked over for cartilage
1 hard boiled egg, finely chopped
1/2 cup sherry
1 tablespoon finely chopped parsleyIn the top of a double-boiler, melt the butter and flour together. Cook the mixture for 3-4 minutes for a blond roux. Stir in the onions, celery, and garlic. Season with salt, pepper, and mace. Cook the vegetables for 2 minutes. Whisk in the milk, cream, hot sauce, and Worcestershire. Bring the liquid up to a boil and reduce to a simmer. Simmer the soup for 15 minutes. Stir in the crab meat and continue simmering for 10-15 minutes. Reseason if necessary. Sprinkle the chopped eggs in the bottom of each bowl. Ladle the soup into each bowl. Drizzle the soup with the sherry. Garnish with chopped parsley.

Vickie and I have an ongoing philosophical debate ... we spend time in both Maine and Culebra.  Does this Maine winter make us appreciate the warmth of Culebra more?  If we stayed in Culebra from November 1st til June 1st would we like it as much as when we sneak away from the ice/snow for a week or two at a time?  Do the bad experiences in life help us to appreciate the good ones more fully?  Truth be told, I'm starting to think 6 months winter months in Culebra and summer/autumn on the coast of Maine is about as perfect as it could be.

Then there are the issues that really matter:

Why can't places in Maine get their beer as cold as El Batey or Felo at the Hotel Puerto Rico?  (love that guy Felo and recommend his place).

Why is it when I do pinchos in Maine they aren't quite the same?

What would happen if the local Dunkin Donuts or Starbucks hung up a sign that stated "Open Some Days, Closed Others"?

Just wondering ...

Frank

According to my friends who lived in San Juan, every male child on the island has the equivalent of a PhD in thermodynamics by age 6.  At Happy Landings I got a case of beer that was pulled out of a chest freezer.  It was brain-freeze cold but not frozen.  This is science at its practical best.

Sea salt.

What would happen if the local Dunkin Donuts or Starbucks hung up a sign that stated "Open Some Days, Closed Others"?

They would stop trading in the shares, and ship the jobs to Bangalore.

i feel your pain Frank......just FYI, it's Puerto Rican rice and beans for dinner tonight with Hotel PR "hot" sauce from the old days......not only is it good comfort food, it's one of the few affordable foods these days.......

and if you need a good dose of Culebra humor, come to Boothbay Harbor, and I know at least one store in town with the Open Some Days, Closed Others sign.....and it puts the same smile on people's faces as it did in Culebra.:)

As an alternative to soup, here is a project that sounds very good (even though I'm not *usually* a rum drinker) and gives one something to look forward to. It is from Saveur magazine.

The 44 Cordial

Orange and Coffee Flavored Liqueur,

beverage alcohol
1 large naval orange
44  coffee beans
1 cup sugar; just over 44 tsp
1 liter white rum; roughly a quart
Poke 44 1-inch slits all over the orange with a paring knife; stuff a coffee bean into each slit.
Put the orange along with the sugar and rum into a wide mouth jar with a tight-sealing lid. Store and let steep in a cool, dark spot, swirling the jar occasionally, for 44 days.
Remove and discard the orange and strain the liqueur through a cheesecloth-lined strainer. Transfer to a clean bottle and store in the freezer until ready to drink.
Serve neat or over ice.
Makes 4 cups

So this...

and eventually adding this (chopped, of course) = YUM! (oh...I forgot the sugar...but it just looks like snow anyway)
