March did come in like a lion, and seems bent on going out like one as well. Which of course got me thinking about the folkloric saying again, so I did a little googling and found out something else I didn't know (there are two or three million things left on that list...but I'm working on it).
This is out of USA Today - Swanson & Rice, The Weather Guys (yes, such a credible source, but I'm buying this one because it sounds true enough and The Stargazer, Jack Horkheimer, whom I just love, agrees).
"Do you know the origin of the weather proverb about March, "in like a lion, out like a lamb"? For most locations, the average temperature at the end of the month is higher than at the beginning, so the proverb typically has some meteorological truth to it, but where did it come from?
The phrase apparently has its origins with the constellations Leo, the Lion, and Aries, the ram or lamb. It has to do with the relative positions of these constellations in the sky at the beginning and end of the month. But don't take my word for it, check out this illustrative cartoon from the Stargazer himself, Jack Horkheimer."
The official discussion says basically that we are in for building north winds and seas again. Not as strong as last time but it could be enough to be disruptive, so if you are planning on needing to get to the big island by ferry in the next couple of days...be forewarned it could be iffy.
The winds ARE picking up, even as I type. Going from a pretty calm morning and early afternoon to gustier periods as the day goes along. No baa baa below the stars.
The wwwiii model guidance continue to
indicate a steadily increase in seas...initially from the north
northeast and later on from the east northeast...across the
Atlantic waters and across the Caribbean passages starting late
tonight and continuing until the upcoming weekend. Winds will also
increase during the next few days. These new swells event will
peak on Thursday...subsiding slowly after that. A high surf advisory
for the exposed northern coastal waters and/or a Wind Advisory for
elevations above 1000 feet will be require as early as tomorrow.
Painting from google images...I couldn't find the artist! |

Chances of rain...but not enough to pin high hopes on, unfortunately.
