It's not just another holiday...

so on this day when the sun is shining here, take a minute for those who are no longer with us because of their service in the US military, and for those left behind.

No words necessary for this shot, except to brag that three of these young men are my nephews. The Foothills District Boy Scouts held their annual flag placement ceremony Saturday at the Marietta National Cemetery. Scouts placed flags on each of the graves.

This editorial in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch is about my friend and classmate, Curran Jones.  To this day, his brother, Courtney, and I are friends.

I really liked the editorial...letting the reality of one family's loss speak for itself. Also, the first comment by Bill Haas was excellent. Thanks for sharing this, Doug.

First observed as Decoration Day Post Civil War, it
was a solemn tribute to the men who had fallen in
war. In my youth it was still referred to as Decoration
Day. Slowly but surely wanton commercial interests
stole the day and now many of us think of it as the
beginning of the summer, the end of spring, and the
Indy 500. Patriotically Indy was called the Liberty
Sweepstakes post World War I then the Memorial
Day 500 after World War II, Vietnam didn't receive
any guilty monikers it was now simply the Indy 500.

Families came together originally to decorate graves
of the fallen and extended it to all their lost relatives,
this lent itself to wonderful family get togethers and
remembrances. Soon we became too busy to visit
the graves. Now with the advent of cremation popularity
there is no grave to obligate us, only memories.
Maybe we need a new way of respect, a family
reunion day, like mothers day, but specifically for
remembrance and storytelling, they live again when
we take the time to remember.

To me Memorial Day is an abominaton an absolute
disrespect to the fallen. The pageantry that obligates
patriotism with silence and salutes is not what it
should be about. Now it's at an impersonal level and our
loved ones who are in mass graves are a showcase
for politicians?

It should be about people coming together
to remember specifically someone in our family or
community who was taken early from us and who's
sacrifice we respect and honor, like the Boy Scouts
did at Marietta National Cemetery. Sacrifice, it is an
enormous word. The idea that young men and
women would volunteer to protect our nation our
way of life and some to give the ultimate sacrifice,
their lives, requires something from us, something
respectful, something solemn, something grateful
in a personal way.

On Feb 23, 1969 the "enemy" infiltrated the 9th
Infantry base camp Dong Tam in the Mekong Delta,
satchel charges ignited the ammo dump, literally
100's of tons of rockets and anything you can think
of rained down on Dong Tam. Soldiers died, men
and women were maimed. To the families who
lost a loved one that day and to the ones who
survived, Memorial Day is not a day of pageantry
or a platform for the politically ambitious,
it's a day to remember.

If you use 1939 as the starting date of WW II, it makes you stop and pause....and they're still driving and having fun in parades (they flirt well also):)
