Light rains started around 1 a.m. lasting on and off until about 5:30. The electricity failed about 2:30, leaving still, hot air when the fans stopped (funny how that works), coming on about 5:30. Omens and portents abound. Either I'm having a seriously bad case of cabin fever, or it's been a weird week or both

Y'all can have some of ours...here come the floods again. I've already cleaned up my river property twice this spring.

i saw that on the news.....I'm soooo sorry!!! Bike Dude's mother is NW (i'm sure he'll correct me on this -- but he was always the direction guy between the two of us) of Chicago, and she reports that everytime it rains now, she's got to run home to drain her basement out....
you can send some our way as well -- I'm having to water 2 times a day.....we've had 2 days of rain since April. and to add insult to injury, all the mosquito and black fly larvae is hatching all at once when it does rain, making Admin's body full of bleeding welts. life in the north country.....

Wifey purchased a new kind of mosquito control item which seems to be working. It is a bucket with perforations into which you mix some enzymes that mimic mosquito breeding smells. It evidently traps them or sterilizes them or something. We hung it from a tree limb above the intermittent creek in our back yard, where we suspect they hang out and breed, and, so far, the usual clouds of skeeters have not materialized. The instructions say to replace the mixture when it gets "rank", which is probably soon, tho' I haven't smelled a thing yet.
I'll post the particulars this week-end, after I find out what it's called, where she got it, and how much. It'd be cool to find out there is an effective way to control the little devils without spraying poison or breathing nauseating Off or citronella fumes.

i'll try anything at this point -- I'm in the woods, and I just can't be outside without my bee keepers hat on.....
I have one of the SkeeterVacs, which runs off propane, which traps an amazing amount, but not enough!!!! The Think Green side of me kinda disappears when it comes to late spring, early summer in Maine.
anyone out there find a Deet-free bug spray yet that works as well as the scary chemicals?

WHAT'S BEST FOR YOUR FAMILY?
KID SAFE, NON-DEET BUZZ AWAY INSECT REPELLENT
- Rated # 1 Natural Insect Repellent In Independent Tests By
- Good Housekeeping Institute Report
- The National Parenting Center
- University of Guelph
Eugene, Or March 2000 -
Kids love outdoor adventures and having a great summer is what it's all about. Camping, hiking, picnicking, canoeing, water-skiing or horseback riding through the woods, kids just want to have a great time.
Fortunately, it's never been easier for families to enjoy an outdoor adventure and still have protection from mosquitoes, biting flies, fleas, and ticks.
Eve McClure, President of Quantum, Inc., and mother of two young children, was resolute in her intention to formulate a product that safely protects kids from both insects and DEET. She explains," Why? Because DEET is a pesticide and has been associated with a variety of health problems ranging from dizziness to seizures, and children are especially susceptible. I feel good about protecting my kids with Buzz Away."
There's a range of natural insect repellents, but Buzz Away stands out from the crowd, winning high marks for excellent performance from Good Housekeeping Institute, The National Parenting Center, and University of Guelph. First sold in 1994, Buzz Away is now proven to be one of America's leading brands of natural insect repellents.
These studies are the first time credible independent organizations have tested the effectiveness of the leading brands of natural insect repellents against one another.
- Buzz Away awarded the National Parenting Center Seal of Approval.
- Independent testing by the Good Housekeeping Institute and Canada's University of Guelph ( product testing for the government) prove Buzz Away is more effective.
Buzz Away is more effective than other leading natural repellents including: - Avon Skin So Soft Bug Guard
- Avon Bug Guard Moisturizing Sun Block Spray
- Natrapel
- Jungle Juice
- equaled effectiveness of OFF! Skintastic (DEET-based repellents)
The Good Housekeeping Institute rates Buzz Away as the most effective natural insect repellent. The 1997 August issue of Good Housekeeping Magazine article "Rating Natural Insect Repellents" reported: "The Institute's Chemistry Department concluded that...of the natural products, Buzz Away was the most effective."
The National Parenting Center (TNPC) awarded Buzz Away with the National Parenting Seal of Approval in 1997, 1998 and again in 1999 after being tested for effectiveness by numerous families in five US cities. For children the most favored method of using Buzz Away was the moist towelettes, which were easy and quick to apply and gave a good dose of repellent. The DEET-free application was also appreciated since it didn't harm clothes, plastic, and rubber.
The University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada, a leading university in Canada for government based research, also proved that Quantum's Buzz Away Natural Insect Repellent works better than other natural repellents. In an independent scientific study at Guelph, head researcher James Heal (Department of Environmental Biology) concludes that "Buzz Away is one of the best non-DEET based products we have tested."
Now it's easier than ever to get the protection you want "when" and "how" you want it with the complete line of Buzz Away's convenient and easy-to-use-products. After all, it smells great, it works, and more importantly, it's DEET-free.
Buzz Away is formulated with Citronella, Cedarwood, Eucalyptus, Lemongrass and Peppermint - pure, natural plant extracts which repel bugs. Registered by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Buzz Away Spray is now rated the most effective DEET-free insect repellent available.
No need to apply an insect repellent on top of sunscreen, Buzz Away Sunscreen Lotion has got you covered. An SPF 15 / sun-block formula has been added to the Buzz Away formula to provide the active woman with full protection from painful insect bites and the harmful rays of the sun.
Touching up has never been easier than with Buzz Away Towelettes, a natural bug repellent in handy towelettes.

this is my spray of choice.....and it works really well (and doesn't smell all that bad either). I do find however, when it's really thick out there, I need to pull out the Deet....

I was wondering about those - they are fairly expensive so I was waiting for some reports. I was told by one person (a salesman) that they're not effective until the second season (fewer skeeters to reproduce). I'm looking forward to hearing more from Doug about his new "trap." The skeeter situation may get worse in New England with so many of the bats dying due to a fungus disease.

What does that do? Keeps your pockets real soft, for one thing. Keeps your change smelling pretty. Puts people in that mellow good mood a whiff of *fresh air dried laundry* gives, so waiting in lines becomes a more pleasant experience.
If you don't have pockets you can pin one of these to the inside of your pants or shirts/blouses. For a blouse, use tape. Some wear them as bandanas, after tie dying them in bright colors. You may have to stitch a few together, depending on the size of your head.

I would get out more if I didn't have to tie-die and stitch up those 72 bandanas you asked me for

OK, here is the scoop. It is called OakStump Farms Mosquito Trap and you can read about it and other 'green' solutions to pests at http://www.springstar.net . OakStump stuff is at http://www.springstar.net/PDFs/OakStumpFarms.pdf . They make traps for quite a few different critters, including yellow jackets, which I'll be looking into this August. They recommend 2 traps for most average size yards. The traps were $11 and refills were $4.
So far, we are still mosquitoless in our back yard. I've had a couple nibbles in the front, where there is no trap. Wifey's sister is also pleased with hers.
