I first thought rain was coming up the bay...then wondered if I was going blind! But it's Sahara dust,
According to Dave on stormcarib.com The wind shift from the east brought about by high
pressure has brought with it a large patch of Saharan Dust which is
expected to linger for a few days | It's very gusty here (and my cart front is getting painted today, natch! Oh well, a bit of Sahara dust will make it so...authentic) which might help blow away the no-see-ums which followed the mosquitos. It sounds like it's going to be a less than postcard sky for the beginning of my brother's visit...we'll just have to fake the pictures later.
I end my housesitting gig today and head back down to the waterside, where I won't have the high view, but I'll have MY view! It's been a good time critter sitting, except for this morning when I came back here and found one of the dogs decided to try out my red tea...and they've been so good until that little incident. Oh, aren't animals fun? No special treat for YOU today, bucko!
If you've never seen serious Saharan dust...here's what it looks like over Culebra (much like Montserrat ash, except on landing).

The cart front isn't finished yet, but already there is QUITE a difference. I'm so excited!
(I don't know how Mark can take the same amount of time to do this that I have taken just trying to paint my freaking floor, which I have screwed up two times already - bloodied my toe dropping a hammer on it and have paint from here to there - and it still looks like one of these dogs did it - I am the world's worst painter, confirmed yet again - and no, you will NOT see a picture of the floor!)

Yikes!!!! that doesn't look fun.....you may get to continue feeding red tea to the dogs (I assure you, it wasn't Dudley ) -- flights might be canceled with that bad a dust.....
so the cart will have a textured look to it!! it's looking mighty good.....
I hope your brother realizes the pain and agony you're going thru Last edited on Wed May 16th, 2007 01:32 pm by admin

Yeah...I've wondered a bit about the flights...Jonny's too, as this is supposed to last and he and Merri come in on Friday.
Oh...and you are correct, Dudley is not the culprit (and got the treat for being such a sweetie).
My brother is my biggest cheerleader, trust me, any suffering I go through worrying about it being a *perfect* visit, he'll make sure I get distracted from that stupid idea...can you say, Dinghy Dock?? Cooking for us? Yee haw!
OH!!! Juanito is here, with Randi. They are getting married Sunday at Flamenco, and he was trying to get in touch with the mayor for a party in the plaza...so I'm just going to tell Jonny and Merri this is all for them and enjoy!

Wow, kinda makes Ensenada Honda look like the Thames, eh, Dr. Watson? What I'm not getting is how this stuff doesn't land...looks like vacuum cleaner two-a-days.
Juanito is the dready guy who growls, right?

unfortuantely, the dust does land -- and makes an awful dusty mess.....when it's that bad, they don't fly the big jets because the engines suck in the dust.....
should be a pretty sunset tonight tho!!

Yep, he's the dreadlock guy. Juanito doesn't growl, Juanito speaks JOY..."Cookie LIOOOOOONNNNNNN!" (oh, maybe that seems like a growl!)
To me, Juanito personifies Culebra...I've never met such a happy person (and yes, I know he can be less than smiling, but it ain't often...sorta like, have you ever seen Joe Ice not smiling?) and is definitely one of my favorite people on Culebra...even if he does work in Boston (sorta like Willy F, another favorite...even if he does work in Florida)!

I talked to Kelly to let her know they might be getting an extra day of holiday in SJ. I haven't heard a plane all day (doesn't mean one hasn't flown, but I've not heard one yet). Holy chit! I DID just hear and see a helicopter flying about 50 feet over my rooftop just now though...whoa!
We'll see about that sunset. It looks a LITTLE brighter out, but you can feel it...in the throat and eyes...argh.

The sun is now out. It's still dusty, but the planes are flying. And! TA DA!!!! I am so thrilled with what Mark did...of course...now the rest of it looks like crap...but that is for later
p.s. Someone driving by today said Mark should be painting my picture on the front...and so he has! Yes...the hanging low part of the hammock is me, after those bottles of wine...

The cart is beautiful! Can't wait to see it in person - 9 days bayybee!
Doug - my parents, while in Culebra in March, said that the soil looked "just like Georgia red clay." Until they scraped off the hill across the valley from me, I hadn't really noticed that the soil was reddish. Surely a product of Sarahan dust.

I don't know if the brother or sister is more excited.....I think all bartenders on Culebra should be very scared!!
and then a week later, Diving Debbie on a whirlwind tour? You all are in for it!

You g-u-u-y-y-y-s-s-!
Actually, the good news is that the barriers to a New Year Culebra visit are pretty much gone...I'm watching airfares, now.

I'm not 100% there yet.
The way it came down was this. My every other New Year buddies and I had identified a place to rent and were about ready to book it when two bailed on us (newly married couple). I was then going to either replace them or go with a smaller place, when the March BVI-Culebra trip happened. When I showed them my pics, the guys said let's do Tortola instead. I was ok with that, even though it lacks the home-away-from-home vibe I get on Culebra.
Then yesterday, one of the three of us remaining in the plan let me know that he's going to Patagonia next year and cancelling all his other plans so he can afford it. Last night I talked to the other traveller about changing back to a Culebra trip and he's iffy - "ask me in a week". I'm no stranger to solo travel, but it changes my thinking on where to stay, and it also puts into play my annual invitation to visit my south Florida friends for Christmas - I've neglected seeing them for about 5 years, now. What my decision really boils down to is, am I coming New Years or in the spring. Gotta think this through, and I'll keep you posted.

I don't think solo travel exists on Culebra......I've been walking the fence on New Year's -- the building my store is in is going on the market and I need to move the store (and I swore I wasn't doing another move.....never say never), so it comes down to where I'm at.....but if you end up doing a New Year's, I'll definately plan on being there.....just think we can hand deliver burritos to Debbie
