(this post is really whacked, as I can't seem to make the code work right for posting quotes and my own words...sorry for the confusion!)

Well, Bermuda waits for the PGA next weekend, reporting blustery weather and Hispanola waits for funerals and places to live that are dry. Count your blessings again
today.

This from the DR via stormcarib.com

Buenos dias

My lack of reports of the tragedy
that afflict us was caused first for my lack of access to the internet
and to the excelent job of my fellow correspondents. Congrats to them.

The
news is all bad. The death toll reached 73 this morning. some 40
missing, God help them. Comunications are being restored and isolated
areas are again reachable. Crops lost and flooded land will bring
trouble for everybody for months. So many lost their loved ones and
their homes that there are no words to describe the suffering.
Shame on those that failed to warn in time of the approaching storm!!!!
We need all the help the world can give us. To those that allready
responded,  many thanks. A lot of work is now needed to prevent
epidemics in crowded shelters. Water sanitation and prevention of
mosquitoes breeding is extremly dificcult under flooding condition.

Best wishes, A. Read

While here, quite a few are reeling from the effects of Johanna's going away
party. I, in a pain med haze, forgot my camera, but I've been promised
some photos from others more sharp to the moment. But the pictures that
I have in my head are pretty splendid. A good time was had by all, and
Johanna, I can safely say, most of all. Checking my mail, no pics yet, but I will
post as they come along. I know there are some finny ones, and no, that is not
a typo

I did find these in my yard this morning, floating at the land's edge. My
own explanation is that coconuts have become living creatures and these two
have made their way out, migrating to where ever the coconut convention
is going on. Which, on Culebra, could be anywhere. If there is a scientific
explanation, please post!

those of us stuck on the East coast, and I assume Canada, are trying to run around and make preparations.......we're forcast to have seas to 20' and rain and wind up to 70 mph -- a good blow as they say here. I think Saucy Contessa will be utilizing her own version of "Open Some Days, Closed Others" tomorrow.

It does sound like you all are in for it...I have GOT to post this thing from another forum...this guy (lives in the Keys by the way, calls himself the Shrimper) in my opinion, is almost always a pot stirrer, but I thought you'd *enjoy* this...

'The people in New England are used to this. Don't worry about them. Cat.2 pressures are commonplace during the winter Noreasters. Anything Noel has to offer them, won't phase them a bit, infact they're probably laughing at the concerns shown here. As far as the commercial fishing industry is concerned, anyone down here wouldn't have the balls to venture out long lining or lobstering in the conditions they are always faced with in the winter storms. They wouldn't even get out of the harbor. This is nothing to them, it's a walk thru the park.'

Therefore, I expect that good old New England "walk in the park" mentality. In fact, if you aren't out REVELING in this, I'll be sorely let down!
(if you'd like to respond, any of you park walkers, I'll be quite pleased to send them along to him)

Shrimper is right -- we do get some wild storms up here, and this probably isn't even enough to bring the fishing boats into harbor. However, for those of us that have been in Hurricane Alley, I have a very healthy respect for what is coming our way. I do plan on dragging Mr. and Mrs. Bayberry out tomorrow during the storm to go wave watching......and shooting film.

I just got a new generator delivered yesterday, so that I don't have to go through what I went through last winter with no electricity -- lights I can do without, but heat is a major issue for this former Caribbean chicka. I'm going to wrestle with it today and see if I can figure the darn thing out. I did go for the luxury girlie model with electric starter -- apparently the manual ones freeze up in the cold weather and are too cold to touch because of the metal.

I'll continue to post as long as I can. Today is sunny, beautiful and a perfect fall day.

The only Damage to SoFla Noel is Noel took many acres of Beaches and some backyards in the Palm Beaches, leaving us with a mild cool front and surely a future tax Hike for Beach Replenishment programs from Miami to Melbourne

Glad that's all the bad news, bro. When will they learn beach replenishment doesn't work, screws up the ecology? When? Never; too much valuable property to sell and re-sell...

So he's right huh? Hmm. Cool on getting the gennie, good luck with your new best friend!

unfortunately, I spend the afternoon in the ER with one of my best friends, who had a heart attack this morning. His wife is legally blind, so I was her eyes. So I didn't get to wrestle with the generator, and will just hope for the best.

Actually, most people around here, surprisingly, are taking the storm warnings seriously -- the gas stations and grocery store were packed. another friend has a son on a fishing trawler on the Grand Banks -- needless to say she's not a happy camper.

I'll post as I can....

Weather Channel and our local news are reporting predictions of 100 mph winds and 40 foot seas out in the open water. Coast Guard has pulled out some of their boats. Even for brave New Englanders, this one is being taken seriously.

Yes...that is to be taken seriously, no matter who you are. Hoping for the best and that those out there have time to get back in, or at least where they need to be.

As I'm not seeing anything from our admin, I'm assuming the power is out for now. Hope she figured out that gennie!

While brightly overcast and warm here (almost 80 at not quite 8 a.m.) the weather on half the the east coast of the US is a different story.

We're still okay here in Bayberryland.   But braced.

Admin may be helping out in the heart attack situation from yesterday -- or still outside tying things down and caging the coyotes.

admin is home finally......rain is starting to come down more heavily and wind gusts picking up. I've been at the hospital most of the day, and they are in "emergency" mode. Most surely, we'll loose power soon. Luckily, Noel, while having intensified a fair amount, is still a fast mover now, and hopefully the worst will be over around midnight. Reports from ham radios and fishing vessels not far off the coast are horrible -- waves are already over 20 feet high. My prayers are with all still out to sea.

Interestingly, this is the first time I can remember everyone paying attention to the warnings -- the gas lines were packed this morning as was our grocery store.

With all the excitment with my friends, I never did get a chance to check the generator, so I'm praying for a speedy recovery to life back on the grid.

Inland is forecast to get a foot of snow with this -- it's right on the line here, and cold and very, very nasty outside.

I'll post later if I can.

Good luck with everything tonight admin!  We will be sending good thoughts up your way.  Maybe a bottle of wine and some furry friends can help keep you warm if your power is out for too long! :)

LOL....furry friends I have in plenty. Last spring, in the big storm when I was without power (and heat) for a week, the dogs, cats, and even ferret all cuddled with my on the futon (next to the fireplace).......furry friends do have their benefits!

the wind has picked up quite a bit, and I'm watching my trees swaying.....I just pray the ones closest to the house don't go. The tree guy is due to come on Thursday, to get me ready for winter storms. Timing is everything. Who woulda thought a hurricane in November in Maine?:X

I've got a great new blues radio station playing, I've got my flannel PJ's on and my fuzzy wuzzy slippers.....

You know, other than the storm thing of course, that sounds like a pretty good evening.  I love my flannel, fleece and fuzzy wuzzy slippers too!

I hope your trees end up vertical.  Good thoughts. :D

large trees are being reported as down along with wires, so I fear the warm and fuzzy part of the evening is about to go south......and it's really storming here -- the rain and wind gusts are just pounding my windows.

I suspect soon I will be adding candlelight to the mood of the night.....but as long as it's one night, I can handle the adventure part of it.

I used to adore those occassional nights in Culebra when it was cold enough to pull out the flannel nightie......felt like heaven!

Mr. & Mrs. Bayberry reporting in from way out on the shore of an island -- it's pouring, howling, and VERY, VERY  cold.   Un-oh -- first power blip just happened.   The         90-100 mph gusts are sobering, to say the least....
