Well, today was a day when I wanted to go around the island and get a lot of pictures to have, because Culebra is changing so quickly, and in many ways not in positive ways. I wanted to document the Culebra where my heart is.....and I got some wonderful pictures.

HOWEVER, I had to wait to get my shot until this horrible thing passd by. Yes, folks, that is a bleeping (insert words to your desire) cruise ship that passed between Culebra and Cayo Norte and then stopped this side of Culebrita....my stomach turned, and my heart and soul sank.....

And then she left, and peace surrounded me as I watched a white heron fishing at the end of Larga, and a crab busily trying to get a baby conch out of it's shell....the Culebra that I love

And Seadream Yacht Club is anchored out off the ferry docks-- ?for the night?   For the curious, visit the website (same name).    Definitely for the well lined pocket.

Not for the night...they are probably gone now, headed to Virgin Gorda, St. Barts, etc. Met some of the crew at Dinghy Dock (as well as some of the passengers), they carry 102 passengers, something like 96 crew. Capt. Jack and Pat and a lot of other locals were there - they certainly got a taste of local gringo color ;)

Ick! and Shoo! 102 passengers to 96 crew? Definitely deep pockets. Hope they didn't find anything to keep them coming back.

How do most locals feel about it? Like the revenue? Do the passengers spend money? or would most people not like to have cruise ships (even small ones) visit?

I and many of my scuba diving friends have watched these behemoths RUIN small tropical islands. I haven't been to Cozumel since 1999. This week on scubadiving.com's forum, someone posted a pictorial of the shoreline taken from the dive boat. Besides all the huge new hotels, I was shocked by all the cruise ships. There's a place that no longer appeals to me. :X

I really don't know the answers to those questions, as I think this is the first time they have come here and they were only here for a few hours. I really don't have a big issue with 100 people (we get hundreds off the ferry all the time) like I would with 2000 people...I have a bigger issue with the ship itself and what it is doing to the water, the fish, etc. That's what I'd like to find out about.
And yes, Culebra is changing...even in the short time I've been here. It is impossible to put the genie back in the bottle once it's out, but it IS possible to contain the boundaries...if people can decide what those boundaries should be...and then convince those in power to abide by those decisions. Easy for ME to type!

Having been on Culebra for a great many years, and seen various upscale smallish cruise ships come here (yes, I know the reason the latest visitor is named "Yacht Club" -- because they aren't a cruise but more of a YACHTING experience --), my theory is the the only passengers who come ashore are the more adventurous and casual ones, and only one or two really appreciate Culebra.   The ones we'd prefer didn't discover us stay aboard.   I doubt that this visit signals an epidemic of such ships....

As a former store owner, I can see the advantage to having some well heeled visitors visit Culebra for a few hours, hopefully use their gold American Express cards at many of our great boutiques and stores as well as restruants, and fall in love with Culebra and come back for a longer visit or tell their friends.

However, any large boat is detrimental to our surroundings and waters -- it was anchored near the reef yesterday, and in an area where sea turtles are known to call home (as well as a whole under water world) These "yachts" can cause a lot of damage that will severly impact Culebra for years to come.

Does the Municipality see any of the port fees charged and if so (although I doubt the Ports Authority shares $$ nicely), could those funds be put towards enivironmental education?

Let's face it -- in today's world, when it has become critical that we all leave as small a footprint as possible, a ship of that size does not leave a small footprint!!! Even Prince Charles canceled his vacation to try and equal out the carbon his travel to the US released......

Imagine what this guy thought when he heard the boats engines in his front yard? He hid in the sea grass until the rumble and vibration of the ships engines had gone around the point.....

While never getting a reply from that company, I have noticed they don't seem to be around here since our campaign, unless someone tells me differently?

I didn't know of your campaign, and more power to it. Once these people start sniffing around they never forget. They tend to rape and pillage more cost effective areas first. If you feel this guy is over reacting I AM. Until you live and witness this monster at work you have no concept of this its power and appetitte.:X not at you
