I have posted The Hank Golet Collection on the internet.
Last night I resized, tweaked and assembled the collection.,
as I looked into the faces of these incredible creatures I had
this goofy idea about how they needed me and trusted me
to make them look good. Of course it didn't make sense but
like all good epiphanys they strike without notice and sometimes
from left field. It finally dawned on me that what I was feeling
was a sense of stewardship, a responsibility we all share. These
incredible creatures are in fact at our mercy, and we are at theirs!
Not mercy in some kind of arrogant dispensation, but mercy by
grace in knowing that our own plight is tied to theirs. We need
each other. Culebra will be saved by all of us, including "them".

First, kudos on the hard work of posting the collection and your words the photos inspired (representations of the real thing, all around us, we're so fortunate!). Thanks, Jim!
Second, what fantastic pictures! They should be in a book, Birds of Culebra. Hank gives so much to the community with his bird walks and freely sharing his years of knowledge to anyone who cares to come along. I know that I hear from the tourists who tag along that they really enjoy the opportunity and are usually quite surprised we have something of this caliber on offer...for FREE! Thank you, Hank.
Now...if only that were the sort of banners we would see plastered around town, nature walks, bird walks (yes, Hank and Nadine do pass around flyers and they are posted), ecological and environmental symposiums (a grand word for a simple thing).
This is the present and future we can work for, with pride and love of Culebra.

(In the meantime, pick up those plastic bottles bags, those cans and styrofoam food containers you pass by on your walks. Help to keep the fish and birds from running...afoul...of our debris.
(sorry - can't help a bit of my continual rant on trash)

You are on the money! The potential invasion of Soní has really
had a lot of us thinking. You put it into words so well, what we
really have is extraordinary. It's time to bring the "Real" Culebra
to the forefront of everything, protests, promos, etc.
Can you imagine, "they" are trying to put in an "Eco-Parque"
(notice the sophisticated spelling) in a wildlife reserve. And to make
sure its really absurd they want to put a strip of houses in the middle
of it. And an observation tower overlooking their roofs.
Who is the "Parque" for? It's actually bio-vital swampland, I
wonder how much Eco-Friendly Mosquito spray they'll need?
Eco-Parques in Wildlife Reserve?..It would be like
taking the Serengeti Reserve and making a Zoo out of it. The point
is, without the real thing, we have
a tendancy to go astray of real stewardship.
Eco-Parques do have a purpose, in big city shopping malls, hopefully
to educate the young and prevent them from becoming trophy hunters.
Maybe someday they will find their way to the real thing....
.....if it is still here.

The petition against what is going on at Zoni/Soni is at Excetera. Jim, can there be a way for longtime visitors and owners to sign the same petition? Can you all figure that out?

Absolutely, there was some confusion, slight disagreement over
who would sign. The CC got several requests from people
pleading to sign. The online petition does not distinquish
between residents or not. They can sign any petition anywhere
we'll sort it out later.!
The problem stemmed from the concern that we wouldn't get
enough "local signatures. But that is a separate problem that
needs more energy and circulation. Don Monchín didn't save
Culebra by himself, he was a leader, and following was many
Big Islanders and Statesiders/NA's

Ok, I know my brain is turned off for the weekend, but are we to print, sign and mail this to....who?  I wasn't sure how to go about this!  We are going to be on island in 12 days, would it be better to just sign the one at Excetera?  Anything I can bring down to help?

Anyone can private message me their e-mail address and I'll forward a e-mail where you can give Abbie White-Thomas permission to sign the petition for you.

Thanks for the info, we will get the petition signed one way or another!

Debbie, I have to crack up because what you view as "going back already" we see as "FINALLY getting back down"!!  We were there in March with a group and then planned this trip, but by April my husband was pushing for another trip in June!! :D  Unfortunately, it didn't pan out :P and it has been a long, tortuous summer waiting for our next Culebra "fix".  He keeps saying the March trip didn't really count because we had the kids, friends and family there......it just wasn't the same!!  Does that sound familiar?

We can't wait!!!  We are going to do the Vieques bio-bay on the back leg of the trip this time!  Our first jaunt over there so we are excited about that, too!

I got a kick out of Beachbound's post, it is eerily familiar to those of us
who live here year round. Here's the scenario, family is coming down,
gonna stay with you, and everyday your their host. Nobody lets on
to the guests, but by the 3rd or 4th day your close friends are
saying "How much longer" with an understanding and empathetic look
on their face. The usual reply " X days, I can hardly wait" then we feel
guilty and say "I mean I love my_______but next time, I'll rent them a car!"
We love independant relatives!

Oh yeah - same for me. We had 13 people (not all staying with us) come in for Lewis' birthday in March. Looking ahead, we planned to stay for two weeks - just so that we could have the second week entirely to ourselves (and it still wasn't enough!)

Everybody is jealous of somebody...It's all relative!  Now, I've got a $115MM powerball ticket in my formerly nicotine-stained fingers, and it might go a long way toward easing my jealousy...Doug

Jim (and Hank),

I hadn't seen a yellow-crowned night heron on Culebra - great picture.  We have them along certain float streams in Missouri, I've noted them on the Jack's Fork and the Eleven Point.  My smug, travel writer friend insisted I must have seen a green heron as he tried to lord it over we peons on the Eleven Point.  The fact that we all saw several YCNHs an hour later remains the most convincing evidence of a just diety since he said the same thing to (about) me regarding green sea turtles on Culebrita, aboard Teresa's boat, just as four of them surfaced.

During the posting of the Hank Golet collection I
had to do some research to identify the Hanno Blue
Butterfly. I lost my notes on it.
I searched and searched and during the process looked
at lots of pictures of bugs. And all of a sudden I found
this incredible face, Any guess as to what it is?
I'll post the answer shortly...have fun...and yes it is
real and unretouched!

You know, Jim...that is as real and untouched as you are, my friend. And, in both cases, I don't have a CLUE as to the total reality, or the identity. I look forward to your revelation (if I had to guess, I'd go with a cat~fish).

That incredible face above belongs to a Dragonfly. To be
exact: insects- Emerald Dragonflys - Stripe-Winged-Baskettail-
(odonata-corduliidae-epitheca-costalis) I also noticed other
dragonflys with faces that looked like little oldmen, but nothing
as astounding as this.
WAIT! As I was posting this I decided to put in the link to the picture for
any doubters out there, AND I FOUND ANOTHER ONE! This little fellow
is a Blue Dasher Dragonfly...kinda looks like a monkey face, no?
And we are wondering what kind of life there is on other planets!
here's the link:
http://www.macro-photo.org/species-checklist-arthropods-insects-birds-avians/dragonflies-odonata-macro-photo-images-gallery.htm

P.S. Judd, you would be so proud of me now. Can I have just one as a pet?

I must tell you, I will never be able to look at a dragonfly with the same innocent joy I had before I knew this close up version.

And I will NOT take a close up of you to prove the point :?
