Governor Aníbal Acevedo-Vilá will dedicate the new
Escuela Ecologica (Eco School) tomorrow in ceremonies
set for 1:00PM , double check time tomorrow morning
(Monday Aug 13th) In addition the Governor will be
attending a groundbreaking ceremony at the Espasas
Project next to Costa Bonita. This is the development
that wants a Marina at the Los Caños del Bruley Bird
Sanctuary in addition to an aggressive Condo plan. The
Governor is also expected to do a ground breaking
ceremony at the parking field next to the airport either
before or after the School event. A press conference
is scheduled after the dedication.
Because of the onslaught of several projects recently the
Culebrenses Por el Libre Acceso a las Playas and the
Asociation of Fishermen, Coralations, and others are planning
a demonstration/protest at the Airport-Soni Rd Intersection
Close to Carlos Jeeps' 8:30Am Monday Aug 13,

While I'm thrilled that the new school is getting dedicated (Go Wally!!!)....personally I hope the Governor gets the point that Culebra will not be bought!!

I hope everyone can come out for this important protest.

I think there is going to be a good turn out. We'll let you know what happens (what really matters is what DOESN'T happen...).

Words alone cannot describe the success of the protest.
Behind the scenes: The Governor was scheduled to do a
groundbreaking ceremony at Punta Carenera, the Espasas
Marina Condo project. The organizing team for the protest
had made contact with the school and the Mayors office to
explain the protest. Wallesca WAS supportive but felt better
after we offered to move the protest away from the school.
At the time little did we know how fortuitous this would be.

The night before a contact told us that the Governor was also
scheduled to do a Groundbreaking Ceremony at the old
Parking lot by the Airport, literally a few hundred feet away
from the protest, everyone was excited now.
That night a certain aid put a bug in the Mayor's ear and
surprising everyone that night Abraham told the Gov. he would
not accompany him to Pta. Carenero. Wait, it gets better !

Now the next morning Digna Feliciano tells the Gov at breakfeast
what the protest and proclamation is all about. The next morning
the Gov's protocol team decides its not in his interest and scratches
the event from the Gov's agenda too! The Gov, now decides to walk
from Happy Landing to the school and make contact with Don
Monchín at the protest, his staff got involved asking questions
and Don Monchín presented the Declaration to the Gov. personally.
And the best part? All of this is interesting but like the tree that
fell in the forest but no one heard it, this might have been pointless
without real exposure in Puerto Rico..feet to the fire,,,no letting up!
And what really did it, was the Protest!
That protest, that energy, that diehard dedication by our friends
and neighbors did the trick, it, got the press's attention. They
swung their cameras and started for the demonstration
Governor or not! And because of that Channels 2 4 6 and 11
covered it on their news! Puerto Rico is on Notice!
This is just the beginning! The Cul Cal site has posted the
proclamation in English and Spanish under the AVISOS Section
title "Protest" Maryann has a set of photos from Teresa at
her photo site. I put a hot link on the proclamation page at the
CC link above.

ALSO!!! The inaguration of the new school, the main reason for the visit, was a success as well. The participation, coordination, events, etc. was great. On the news they showed the protest and very little, if anything, about the openning of the school. I am glad they showed the protests, but it was also a positive event for the children of Culebra. The school is beautiful, the library is great and I really hope that the parents use it with their children and that we get volunteers, both Spanish and English, to read to the children. We need to urge our families to read together. I am sorry the rest of PR did not see our new school.

Let us not just focus on claims of the people, that is great, but we need to talk about the positive things happening here. We need to WORK TOGETHER implementing good things, even if it is a small thing. Nothing in Culebra can be small. Everything counts!

I am not protesting, I am urging all of you to look a the positive things going on and get involve now! Culebra needs us all! :D:(

I am so happy for the children, current and generations to come, of Culebra.....having a great new school with fantastic staff and volunteers can only lead to better community spirit. Congratulations to all involved, and as Paws Nest suggested, if you have some free time, please consider volunteering to read to the children or share some of your life experiences and skills -- its very rewarding!!!

Paws Nest, You are on the money! What I didn't say in my post here
but is on the news ticker at the Culebra Calendar site is that the
August issue will focus on the school opening. The CC had three
reporters there including the news conference. I also attended, the
Governor planted a tree in the School Courtyard. The protest
was important because the Gov. was scheduled to do a groundbreak
at Pta. Carenero and his entourage was loaded with Tourism
types also. Many people felt that Tourism types were trying to "couch"
that opening by doing it on the same day as the Gov's dedication.
It was a major victory for Culebra!. By the way, the
TV news is just a snapshot, The CC site will feature the new school
on the cover and electronically reaches a lot of people. The CC site
gets 7-10,000 hits for the week. The ecological school will be the base
for a public relations campaign for Culebra called CULEBRA SE LEVANTA
(Culebra Rises) The CC will be coordinating with Wallesca the school
principal. The campaign for the rescue of Culebra from overdevelopers
has just started. El Comienzo!

Great news on all counts, win win scenarios both! Paws Nest, do you have any pics of the school dedication to put up?
Sorry this is delayed...I ran off to Luquillo yesterday to Luquillo to meet friends unexpectedly, right before posting pictures...here are a couple I liked a lot.

What a great day for Culebrenses.   Burying official sanctioning of the developers' pet projects and bringing the school to the forefront is the metaphorical equivalent of saying this building is here to lay the foundation for educated Culebrenses to be tomorrow's leaders - not a trade school to staff marina mega-resorts.

I know nothing about the vision of El Gobernador but I liked his message today.

thank you mj for the pics. I didn't have a really good one of the
protest until now. For the the other readers the picture of the two
gentlemen is Jovino and Flores, both who go back to the
Liberation of Culebra days. Flores was in fact one of the
political prisoners during the protest days. There is a related
story in the January 2007 Culebra calendar available online:

Another tidbit about Flores, he is married to CC Sr. Editor Español
Rosarito Morales. There's more! For years Flores and Rosarito
have monitored the Hawksbill nesting in the late Fall at Culebrita.
Ok, one more..Flores cordiality with NA's isn't just politeness,
although he is one hell of a nice guy , it actually goes back to the
Navy protest days. Now your gonna guess how does that figure
since the Navy was N.A. But part of the history already forgot
was that 1. The Culebrense never considered the struggle a personal
matter against the N.A.s or Navy individuals, and moreover, like in
overwhelmingly moreover, 2. the Culebrense were fighting side-by-side
with North American ex-pats living on the Island. 3. Also helping
was a great contingency of Peace Activist (some from P.R.) and many
from the American Friends (Quakers) activists who came here to help.
In fact, check back here later, tonight I'm going to put a link here
on a personal story from one of the activist involved from 1970, I had
been saving it for the expanded History section we are working on,
and particularly a section "The North Americans" , We have a long
history and investment (heart) in this Island side-by-side with the
the culebrenses.
